I agree it is "miles off" in the instant the ball is played (or at least clearly off, miles is a bit subjective). The lineswomen would say the same looking at that still picture. There is clearly zero argument, it is way offside, no debate.Anyone who watches footy will tell you that’s miles off.
Stills can confuse things.
What I was saying, watching it live, it isn't necessarily clearly offside because the picture changes drastically a fraction of a second earlier and later. There are plenty of occasions where I've seen something live (with the advantage of seeing it from a broadcasting widescreen camera) and felt it was miles offside, just like the commentators. Then they show a replay, turns out it was onside.
So, to me, it is silly to judge a lineperson by a single incident that ended up being controversial, using a still picture, when there have been many similar scenarios in the past where the instinctive feeling has turned out to be wrong.
