If the strength of the league was defined by how high a points total the winners got (relative to points available), then the Scottish league would probably have been the strongest league in the world for numerous seasons.

The league has been incredibly weak. Pretty much all of the most wealthy sides have been very poor, even awful. Arsenal haven't even been that great. I don't think Liverpool have even been that impressive, but fair play to them managed to scrape a lot of wins that could have been dropped points.

Some sides have done very well, relative to what you'd have expected. Like Forest. And the 3 bottom sides have been horrific.

For me, the most boring league ever. In fairness, possibly because my side have been so bad. But, there hasn't really been a battle at the top, or the bottom. Only battle is European spots, which might be exciting for sides involved, less so to the neutral. Though maybe it points to it being a good idea having 5 or 6 teams going into Europe, because at least it gives some excitement to domestic leagues when there is no title challenge to enjoy

Yes gone are the days of a tight relegation battle where the bottom sides could cost the title winners serious points.. the league has been very poor this season.

I'm sure city will return next season, united will shoot up with a decent window and if spurs sack the moron so will they.. then suddenly the league will get more competitive again and the race will be tighter

But VAR sees thw incident clear as day and can see it multiple times for various angles

When the tackle yesterday happened it looked a lazy trip and was surprised when he gave a red

When it was shown on VAR you can see why he gave it - it was late , cynical and dangerous , I would hope that if the ref gave a yellow that VAR would have sent the ref to the screen to look again

But it’s the VAR ref that’s been the issue this season - countless times they have seen bad tackles and just gone with the ref

The VAR ref in the Prem is either scared to overturn their mate in the middle or they are completely incompetent and not fit for the job - for some it’s definitely the second one


Look at how it appears to be better in Europe

Spurs game against Frankfurt - ref missed a penalty , VAR got him to check it and he gave it , then he gave a penalty that shouldn’t have been so again VAR got involved and he changed his mind

VAR in the Prem is imo a complete mess and has made the games worse - either sort it out and they actually get involved at the right times ( and not just offsides ) or bin it off

I'm not sure VAR is better in Europe at all, I just think we watch about 10 times more domestic games than European, so we don't miss any of the blunders domestically.

Can't point to anything specific in Europe, as I don't take notes and only see about 3% of European games. But, I do remember some controversial discussion after VAR calls or non calls. And wasn't there some really long decisions recently, taking 4/5 mins, in Europe?

European refs are still human beings, not sure why they'd be any more skilled than English refs? English refs get a bad rep in England, but I'm sure it wouldn't take long for most European refs to get a bad rep if they started reffing in PL

A very balanced reply. I don't think any side has been exceptional and Liverpool have managed to avoid silly draws and defeats which has plagued the sides below them too often hence the gap. I am not convinced they are head and shoulders above the others. Is that a sign of the PL being more competitive where anyone can now get points against anyone or is there perhaps a weakness where FFP has had an impact on buying the very best players that have been the defining piece of the jigsaw

I wonder if the bottom sides, lately, have been hampered because the managers feel like they need to play like prime Barcelona from a decade or so ago. Basically copy Pep. Hipster football.

If they keep getting battered, I reckon one side will come up, play long ball, 2 big strikers up front. And suddenly do some damage because no other side, even the top ones, are used to having to deal with it.

Then there might be a shift to that style of football

Never did Wimbledon any harm. I think you are right and football in the PL has become formulaic and everyone plays a similar style. Even the more direct championship sides that have got promoted seem to ditch what got them there to play a "safer" possession style

The number of wins from losing positions suggests to me that they aren’t as dominant as City have been in recent times, or Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea further back.

That being said they’ve been worthy of the title and Slot’s impact has given the myth of Klopp a battering.
 
Another VAR moan, but how does it take so long to get a decision of offside when it’s really obvious? You could easily see Wood was offside for that goal on the very first replay. So how does it take another minute or so for the decision to come through?!
