I wonder if they should reconsider the "young" player award? Just look at the age of the players on the list:

Haaland (23)
Foden (23)
Saka (22)
Saliba (23)
Isak (24)
Palmer (22)
Mainoo (19)
Udogie (21)

How many of these players would people almost consider "veterans", or at least extremely experienced professional footballers. I bet some players retire at the age of 24 as their body gives up on them

The problem with having such a high age limit on the young player award is that you will genuinely have players on the list who will be on the best overall player award. Thus, in this case 50% of them are also in the running for best overall player, and could easily be Foden or Palmer, and Haaland won it last year.

Maybe best young player needs to be changed to best teenager?

Exactly - Haaland is hardly a breakthrough player, he has about 30 or 40 Champion's League goals and nearly 30 international goals to his name already. Having him in the young player list is a joke. He's already had a career a lot of players would kill for even if he retired tomorrow!

I said we should cap it at 21, but I didn't realise Palmer was already 22 and it does feel like he deserves to be there. Perhaps you say if they were 21 at the beginning of the season. (Palmer has only turned 22 last week.) Or, you know, just be sensible with the nominations and only pick players who have actually broken through that season rather than being long-established international players. But asking any governing body in football to be sensible is a bridge too far.

I would say if your not eligible for the under 21s then your not a young player.

Yeah, I nearly said the same thing, but then I thought there might be a grey area if there's a 29 year old signed from some obscure league that does well or something. Essentially any of these suggestions would be better than what they've got now.

To be fair, if a player finally made his name at the age of 29 years old in the Premier League by being a big hit, after years of mediocrity in an obscure league, that might be the perfect winner of Best Breakthrough Season?

Vardy might have been a contender at around the age of 27/28?

He's younger than Isak as well, and scored more Fantasy Football Points (obviously the most important stat).

Before the nominations for Young Player were revealed, I'd have been convinced Gordon would be on the list.

Isak has been excellent when fit this year. The stats say he has played 27 games but I doubt he started all of them. Before Christmas in particular he was in and out, Wilson often starting. His goal record is impressive, 5 are penalties though.

Gordon has played 33 games, will have started all of them I would guess, 10 goals, 10 assists. Add in his workrate helping out in defence, he has been key to Newcastle this season.

And even Salah who has 28 goal involvements in the Prem

The one player who’s stand out though is Watkins

31 Goal involvements- 19 goals and 12 assists is excellent

Gordon's fitness record this season is an attribute worth celebrating. A player who can stay fit, and put in all that effort, is huge. Especially when so many players seem to be breaking down anytime the wind blows too hard

I mean nobody wants to see Bruno given an award of course, and I'm a little surprised Saka is the best, but it does show you how good Rodri has been. Definitely a glaring omission I'd say.

I'd make some serious ground rules

Player must finish the season no older than 21 to qualify

Player must be in AT MOST their second season in the league.. IE mainoo for united..can be nominated this year or next but not the following season

If you have won it the previous season you can't be nominated

Maybe should just rename it break through player

As you say haaland should not be anywhere near this nomination.

Saliba has been very good every time I have seen him !
Martinez for UTD but he’s missed half the season.

From what I have seen this season no defence has been rock solid.

Saliba is excellent and has come really good of late after having a rough patch, only young and hopefully picks up the Young Player of the Year.

Not aimed at you, but sometimes we all get blinkered by the last few games/weeks/months etc.
That’s why we remember players in good form and write off those who may have had a couple of bad games lately.

Hence why I said stats - he has had a poor finish to the season but still has 18 goals and 10 assists
