Clearly not as good as VVD though...
Hard to compare them as VVD is the only defender on the list.

Has any defence played really well this season they have all had their moments.( even City)

If the list is based on stats it’s hard to see why Rodri isn’t on it, or maybe all the players on it have better stats than him.!
Who knows😉

Odd you mention injuries. I know City, Utd and Liverpool have had a good few.
Have Arsenal had many or have many other teams in the league had a bad season with injuries.
Not going anywhere with this, it’s just with FIFA being threatened with a lawsuit re players over playing. Are the injuries due to overplaying. 🤔

I think a lot have praised Arsenal's defence. They've conceded 28 in the league, City 33, Liverpool 38 and then everyone else a good bit more.

If none of the defences have been great, then I don't think you need to have a defender on the list at all? Although would any Arsenal defenders feel that if any defender is going to be on the list, it should be one of them?

They must have all teams have injuries.
They might have been lucky with key players not having long term injuries.

But if you have three of the back four out plus the keeper long term you’re going to struggle a bit.
That’s when it comes down to quality of the squad.
We can all agree Citys bench could put a top six side out. 😳😉

I clearly said earlier” VVD should not be on it”
Saliba has been very good every time I have seen him !
Martinez for UTD but he’s missed half the season.

From what I have seen this season no defence has been rock solid.

I think it was more getting a Liverpool player in rather than a defender tbh.

It is an interesting thing to look into, as it seems to me that Arsenal have very much been "lucky" with injuries this year. Last year I think they lost Saliba, and many blamed that one injury on their downfall.

Just looking at the back four, as an example, I'm making an assumption that Arsenal's 1st choice back 4 would be White (35 appearances), Saliba (36 appearances), Gabriel (34 appearances) and Zinchenko (26 appearances)

Just comparing to my own side, I'd say our 1st choice back 4 is Dalot (33 appearances), Varane (21 appearances), Martinez (9 appearances) and Shaw (12 appearances).

So, comparing those 2 clubs, Arsenals 1st choice back 4 have played 131 games, Man Utd have played 75 games (probably go to 76 games when Utd play their game in hand). I'd say that is a huge difference. Furthermore, I'm unsure about the cover Arsenal have had when they have had some injuries in defence, but I know that Man Utd have also had lengthy injury periods for Maguire, Evans, Lindelof, Wan Bissaka and Malacia has been out all season.

Was thinking it would be interesting to compare Arsenal to other clubs, and maybe other areas of the pitch. Although it might be difficult to compare with City, as they probably have more than 11 players that could arguably be considered 1st team players on any given weekend. So, a higher proportion of City's absences are more likely going to be down to squad rotation than injury, compared to other clubs.

But, looking at other areas of the pitch for Arsenal, Rice, Havertz, Saka, Martinelli, Odegaard, Trossard, Raya have all played a lot of games, all of whom seem to be very important players for Arsenal. The only players that have played fewer games than I'd expect, I think, are Jesus (25 appearances), Jorginho (23 appearances) and Partey (12 appearances). I'm assuming they had injuries at various stages of the season.

I wonder why?
Nobody else likes them !
Maybe the list compiler is a Liverpool fan!😂😂

It’s always the same every year when it comes to awards , if someone is that “anti” a club then it doesn’t matter what a player does they will always look down on the performance

VVD has been excellent this season but if it’s not him from Liverpool then it’s MacAllister who has been excellent

Rodri is the one who should be on there

The young player awards is missing a few for me

Branthwaite
Bradley
Gordon
Miley
Elliot
Garnacho

The list having established players like

Foden
Haaland
Saka

Just doesn’t seem right

If we are talking defenders I would say that Branthwaite at Everton was worthy of a nomination in the young players award. He has been excellent all season, in an average team, and is part of a defence who have conceded the 4th least number of goals, best outside of the top 3.
Agree. As people said a page or two ago, the age for young player should be capped at 21 imo. Having 24-year-olds in it is pointless, you just end up with the POTS and YPOTS being half the same people in both. Haaland won the senior POTS last year, so to have him on this year's young player list is dumb. Young player implies someone who's just broken through and made an impact. Also, and I know I'm ranting now, but if the POTS winner is 23-24 then surely they then win the YPOTS award as well by default, so it's pointless even having two awards then.

I wonder if they should reconsider the "young" player award? Just look at the age of the players on the list:

Haaland (23)
Foden (23)
Saka (22)
Saliba (23)
Isak (24)
Palmer (22)
Mainoo (19)
Udogie (21)

How many of these players would people almost consider "veterans", or at least extremely experienced professional footballers. I bet some players retire at the age of 24 as their body gives up on them :D

The problem with having such a high age limit on the young player award is that you will genuinely have players on the list who will be on the best overall player award. Thus, in this case 50% of them are also in the running for best overall player, and could easily be Foden or Palmer, and Haaland won it last year.

Maybe best young player needs to be changed to best teenager?

Edit: Seems like me and Orikoru were thinking along the same lines :)

Nah not for me.
