As an indication of how time flies, I saw this on BBC Sport today. Me and Mrs BB were two rows back on the left of the goal as you look, and we both knew straight away it had gone in. Makes Andre Onana look like a safe pair of hands.

Can’t believe it’s 19 years ago though 😳

I remember it well - we didn't get many results at United in those days. I still don't know how it's not been spotted, it bounces just beyond the actual goal line, and then Carroll ended up fully in the back of the net whilst diving to retrieve it. Surely it was obvious? The strike from Mendes was outrageous to even hit the target at that angle and distance.

Oh, it was obvious alright. We couldn’t believe it wasn’t given. Even the United fans were singing “One nil, to the Tottenham”.

Lino should have gone to Specsavers.

That BBC Sport video has an amazing foretelling comment from Alan Hansen in it. Anyone else spot it?

Around 1m9s Hansen says, "Let me tell you... if they introduce this [video technology] and it works everyone will clamour for offside, is it offside, you bring it into grey areas then you'll have carnage."

I never liked Hansen all that much but damn, how right he was.

Surely that’s a wind up??

It seems not. The screenshot below is from the Sky Sports app.

I’m afraid this is one I really don’t understand at all. Very often injured for extended periods, and when he does occasionally feature we get the very occasional goal from him and little else. He’s been stealing a wage for years and is surely long overdue a move elsewhere.

Very poor decision for the red card. VAR destroying the game yet again.

When will the referees grow a pair and look at the replay and use their own minds instead of the muppets at Stockley Park. You know things are wrong when you agree with Aluko o_O

I've just seen this on Twitter... wow. It genuinely feels like we're not far away from slide tackles being taken out of the game altogether. If there's even a fraction of contact now players are being sent off left, right and centre. Managers must be near the stage of instructing all their players not to slide as it's not worth the risk anymore.

Saw a superb shoulder to shoulder ‘tackle’ in the Prem last weekend. Was expecting the ref to blow but he saw it for what it was. Sliding tackles are more of a stretch, with more risk of getting it wrong, but a good one where the slider comes away with the ball is great to see.

There certainly isn’t the level of physical contact there used to be but to be honest with the speed in the game there is now it’s probably a good thing.

It is, which is why it's a shame that it's essentially being phased out. It used to be the case that as long as you won the ball a little bit of contact was accepted, but it seems that now any amount of slight contact on the shinpad means there's a good chance of being sent off by the bloke in the booth at Stockley.

What is disappointing is that the ref on the pitch doesn't have the gumption to stick by his decision. The bloke in the booth is in a sterile situation, watching incidents in slow-mo. The ref last night should have gone to the screen, say 'thank you for pointing this out but actually there was nothing in it'. Decision stands, play on.

I'm less sure about the DCL one. It was a bit of a reckless Hail Mary lunge after a ball he'd lost, studs up into another player's leg. Can't see it being overturned. Unlucky to get a red but lucky he didn't cause an injury.

I think the booth got it right. SLO-mo showed CLewin’s foot jerk as it caught the guy. It was more than just a mere brush. My first thought was the red was wrong but after watching it a few times, the onfield ref doesn’t get that luxury, I think the right decision was made. It was foot up, studs showing and it was reckless.

Would a yellow have been fairer? Possibly but a red stopped CL doing it twice, and will make him more careful in future.
