A real shame. They've had a blast, fully embraced the CL but they've run out of steam at just the wrong time.

They certainly gave it everything, you can't ask for more.
Another waste of a CL spot.

European football is a different beast. Tactics have to change from PL to CL unless you've got a top squad of players.

It wasn't a waste for Newcastle, club, fans, city. They've had a blast. In an incredibly tough group, they nearly made it through. The only way to learn and improve is to be in the competition. They will be better for it, next time.

Anyway, it freshens the competition for neutrals, other parts of the country or Europe. Seeing the same names every year, European league 🤔, is very dull.

Was it?

PSG are a pale shadow of the side they were a few years ago, while Milan and Dortmund are well off the pace in their domestic leagues. There was talk yesterday tipping the Milan manager for the sack.

the reality is Newcastle under achieved in their group. Losing 2 out of 3 home games is poor. They will do better in future given their deep pockets, but this was a disappointing campaign, even accounting for injuries.

Funny how people suggest Newcastle were a waste of a Champion's League spot AFTER the 6 games were completed. Easy to make such claims once the standings are finalised.

Perhaps things would have been different had they not had so many key injuries. Perhaps things would have been different had they not been robbed against PSG in 5th game. But that aside, they were in a position to qualify right up until the final part of their last game.

Half the teams are eliminated after group stages. Impossible for them all to get through, it's ultimately how these types of competitions work.

Apropos of nothing, but this made me laugh yesterday.

My daughter's partner is a NUFC fan. She is trying to take an interest, and watches their matches with him. She was telling me she keeps calling it the Championship League by mistake, which annoys him no end, and he corrects her saying "It's the CHAMPIONS League". I said to her next time he says that, ask him innocently where Newcastle are Champions of?

I await developments.

All I know is, both United and Newcastle have not helped Englands EUFA coefficient by getting knocked out. We need the English sides to make the latter stages of the competitions to gain the 5th Champions League spot for next season.

Spanish and French sides are just below us in point atm and Germany above.

I'd say it was the toughest group out of that stage. PSG might not be the side they were but they are still better than decent. Dortmund are no mugs, they are very experienced in this competition. I think the Milan results are the genuine disappointments but let's remember, it still all came down to last nights match and they weren't far off from pulling it off. A Miggy missed special might be all the difference 🤷‍♂️

What a ludicrous idea. So 25% of EPL teams should qualify for the "Champions" League? Just shows it's all about money.

It will never happen, but I'd love to see us go back to the European Cup which was a proper "Champions" competition. Sadly that will never happen.

I'm all for this.

But should be for winners of all the cups

Europa league winners get in

Champ league winners

Premier league winners

Fa cup winners

League cup winners

I wouldn't do the conference as the winners of that get Europa which seems a fair prize

None of this finish 2nd get champs league rubbish

One of the off shoots of City having 115 charges against them. City finished in a certain position in the champs league that gave an extra spot to the Prem league during the “ 115 charges time scale”.
Re Newcastle it being a wasted opportunity. That’s a shocking statement. Utd had an easy group, Newcastle had the group of death. Dodgy decisions in Paris and injuries cost them. It’s as simple as that. Newcastle last season and hopefully Villa this season will cost one of the “ Big four ” a spot at the top table again next season.

We already have four spots, which I think is too many.

Similar to Man City’s first season in the CL. Fabulous season in the Prem but it was a step for them in the CL. More a naivety about their play rather than not being technically good enough.

Given that Newcastle were in pot 4, I think they got a reasonable draw where all 4 teams were much of a muchness. If they had got a Bayern or Real Madrid, you'd be looking at 3 teams fighting for 2nd place.

PSG are 16/1 to win the CL (which is poor value in my book), Dortmund are 40/1. I'd be surprised if either get particularly far in the knock-out stages.

I would further argue that all cup winners should go into a european competition for cup winners. Whilst they have won something, there is no doubt that a favourable draw in a tournament you only need to play 6 games is a totally different prospect to playing 19 other teams home and away. EC for the winners, CWC for the cup winners, Uefa cup for runners up and maybe 1 or 2 more. ie how it used to be.

Whilst this is true it will get clubs to take those 6 games more seriously once again

I agree with all of this but unfortunately it is just a pipe dream. The so called big clubs have manipulated the competition to protect themselves and their finances. Every so often they might miss out but most years you see the same old teams. Money protecting money, generating more money, protecting money.......

This could of been one of many posts as common place, but the irony amused me. Am curious, after how many years of not excelling will the red club from Manchester cease to be shortened in this way (if I assumed correctly).

They were being called United in the 80s when they had been relative nobodies for the guts of 20 years.

When they're not the biggest club named XXX United in the world?
