Now you are being ridiculous. Fair enough, if you know want to define the top corner as a ball sized area from the crossbar and post, where essentially the ball has to graze both to be defined at "top corner", then you are correct. However, if you allow a slightly wider margin, then it was in the top right corner. Rooney's volley against Newcastle would be described, by most, to be in the top left hand corner. But then you could then say it wasn't, as it wasn't as it was about a yard inside the post.

The goalkeeper was wrongfooted due to the quality of the strike. It was past him and flying in the net before he could even react.
Nah, the Newcastle one was top class, I'd class that as top corner for sure. Especially as it bent in from outside the left post. That's possibly Rooney's best goal for me.

City one, not quite in the top corner, and Hart was wrong-footed because of the wonky flight caused by it hitting his shin. Basically he recognised that it could have gone absolutely anywhere. But yes, agree that it was more than power that beat him.

A set up  , noooooooo. Okay, yes 😄

My hope for this year. Everyone at a sporting event holding up a sign asking for something is ignored. Everyone at a concert with a sign asking to sing, play an instrument etc is ignored. I get irrationally annoyed by this stuff. It's all for social media, one side or the other.

Totally agree. Those begging boards are getting ridiculous.

Very different situation but I like how player interaction works at Tigers rugby. If you are injured and not picked, you are sent to the Junior supporters club to talk to kids and sign autographs on match day, if you are sent off, you work in the club shop on matchdays and if you want an autograph, the players are normally available outside the changing rooms about an hour after the match. Everything else is through the club if you want a signed item.

Yeah, that's often cited as the best bicycle kick ever, not least because he was outside of the box. Would take some beating.

I’d just like to add, I once scored an overhead kick from outside the box in about 1988 for Angel FC, a crappy Sunday morning pub team from Rotherham. Sadly it wasn’t recorded on video 😢🤣

This is why enforcing dissent punishment to try and improve respect to referees is probably futile. Comments and reactions by fans such as this.

They are all for improving respect as long as the decision doesn't go against their team. But if it does go against them, all cards off the table, ramp up the abuse and moaning.

The penalty decisions were just those difficult ones to make. Sometimes they are given, sometimes not. If they are given, referees are slammed for giving a soft penalty. If not, then the other side abuse them for missing a clear foul.

Personally, I think both penalties were soft. But will the laws ever be written to make things like this definitive? Would it even be possible? Probably not.

Just going back to this - because after last night and yet another officiating debacle, is it any wonder fans react negatively to the refereeing in this country?

Just when you don't think it can get any worse, it somehow does.

I'm with you on this. The only deterrent to this sort of nonsense is to take the signs off them at the turnstyles and if they manage to get them through then the stewards should be able to taser them.

Garnacho's goal was superb, but still think Srabia's goal for Wolves v Spurs was just better.

Drove up to Hartlepool yesterday to join a boat for an offshore trip. Stayed in a hotel in the marina and woke up to news that they'd closed the port and the boat was stuck at sea. Have now been sent up to Newcastle to join the boat tomorrow. Heading out for dinner in a bit and then on to a bar to watch the football. I imagine the atmosphere is going to be pretty good especially if Newcastle can get a result against PSG.

Sounds like a good result for you. Should be good fun in the bars tonight. Where have they put you up?

Premier Inn Quayside on Lombard Street so quite close to the city centre. Even better result is that the port is closed until tomorrow afternoon so I can have a couple of beers without worrying about getting up early tomorrow and I'm getting paid. 😃

Walk up the hill, Dean Street, then Grey Street (it's obvious, and also the nicest streets in the city). Just follow people, see where has the game and dive in. Don't worry about going down little streets and lanes, there are pubs everywhere.

I could try to direct you to pubs but it would over complicate things. Plenty to choose from. Have a good night 👍

(Okay, I cracked. My own favourite would be The Duke Of Wellington. Not too far from you and a proper pub that should have the game on as well. Otherwise, just follow my original advice and follow the people in black and white shirts)

Went for a walk earlier and stopped at Akenside Traders for a pint of Neck Oil. It was a lovely pint but think we might look for somewhere a bit cheaper than £6 a pint. Or is that fairly standard pricing for the area?

The Quayside isn't cheap so that isn't a surprise. Go further into the city, up the hill, and it's better, depending on the type of bar of course. Saying that, it's a city so it's more than regular pubs still.

There's always the Spoons a short walk from you 🤭

Thin on the subs bench for Newcastle tonight.

Two keepers and a defender all in their 30's.

Then two forwards, a midfielder and a defender who are all teenagers.
