I have been trying to look at it in more general terms and as objectively as I can. Certainly got no axe to grind (but thank you for the £80million you paid us, lot of good that did).

I look at it more that Maguire is 30, so maybe as little as one more decent contract in him, an England career reaching an end perhaps and not long left on the contract. If he had had 2-3 years left on his contract, if he was a bit younger, if he was getting an offer from a top 6-8 club then you can see things may be a bit different. Training with United may be enough to get him to the Euros and may actually put him in a position than if he was playing badly for another club.

Then you have the Saudi money (not saying that has any involvement but guessing). Stay at United until the end of the season, pocket the cash, scrape into the team for the Euros then sign a nice big deal in the Middle East.

People overlook the fact that these careers are short. He has what 6-8 years left in him

That money has to support him in the lifestyle he wants until he is 90 plus

Or West Ham could have paid him £5m more if they really wanted him ??

Yep - a lot of the fingers being pointed at Maguire and Man Utd but West Ham could have boosted the signing on fee to compensate the player if they wanted him that badly

That's the point we would have if man united had dropped the asking price by 5 million.

They wanted him gone

But it had to be £30 million ? For a player they don't want. Who leaves for nothing next year

Could have accepted 20 mil with zero pay out

I disagree, ten Haag and Yernited are much more culpable. He's 5th choice CB now for them. If Southgate doesnt pick him the pressure on him intensifies on Maguire. I think Southgate has only picked him to try to protect him.

Worst thing that couldve happened for Maguire was his move to West Ham collapsing and staying at Yernited. The focus is now on him.
Southgate clearly said “players in form will be picked”
by any stretch Phillips and Maguire don’t fit that.

GS is the manager ,TH obviously dosnt rate him but GS does!

How does picking him protect him!
It exposes him imo.

I agree 100%, it's just so over the top.

Considering the injury to stones it did make sense that Harry was called up and played. He is an experienced international.

However on the other side. Henderson should not be called up considering the depth in his position

There is litterally no call for him

CBs we aren't that well stocked and maigure has been first choice recently

CMs we have a good selection with Henderson not being first choice at the world cup

And that's without mentioning where he plays now

Yes but in a friendly isn’t that a perfect time to try a new player in the CB role.

we know what HM can and can’t do.

That's what we did wasn't it? The Ukraine game was a qualifier so we played tried and tested with up and coming

Then in the friendly we played the 2 new ones

I think his contract is till August 2025.

At the end of the day both clubs (and Maguire) lost out in the stand off.

I disagree, we didn't lose out. We went out and spent £21 million on Dinos (Konstantinos Mavropanos) who's played in the league before at arsenal , highly rated in Germany and is only turning 26 in December

There must be another defender we can try before Maguire when we had the injury!

It didn't help that Ming's was injured aswell.. he was the next choice

Ben White? We don't know what happened at the world cup but he out of favour now

That's 1st choice (stones) out
3rd choice Ming's out

And Ben White unavailable

You can see why Harry gets the call

It’s a player they signed for £80mil so they are going to want a decent amount for him

If West Ham really wanted him that much then pay what Man Utd wanted and give him the extra bit on signing on - West Ham made a profit in the market in the end so the money was there

That's entirely the point of good business . Just because you have money available doesn't mean you should get ripped off on transfers

30 million for JWP outstanding business

Why pay more when other players are available . Mavropanos will become first choice when zouma next hurts his knee

Well, West Ham wanted Maguire first, you didn't get him. We wanted to sell, we didn't sell him. By my reckoning both clubs therefore lost.

Cant say ever heard of Dinos before you signed him. Looks a good prospect at 26 though.

You don't remember him at arsenal? I think I only remember him because of his ridiculously long name

He didn't play much for them but was highly regarded

Problem with maigure was Moyes wanted him but our director of football didn't.

There was a real clash over getting him in.

Considering Moyes contract ends in summer and our director of football is overseeing transfers for the future do you buy a player who might not suit the next managers system

I think you dodged a bullet by not getting Maguire. Too many players have seen Maguire’s weaknesses in the last 2 seasons, and know that he’s there for the taking in a lot of situations. Keep in on the ground and play around him.

That said, I admire the way he’s stuck it out both in terms of the transfer and knuckling down to fight for a place.

Re the unfortunate own goal. He was half a yard off the pace anyway. If he’d been up with play, and match sharp, I think he’d have got to it no problem.

I agree and same I admire him for sticking to his guns

Not the first player we had it with in the window either

We wanted paulinha of Fulham they said 80 mil for us (riceflation) we turned instead to Alvarez of Ajax £37.50 mil

Whilst I really rate the former I think the better deal has been done for money involved

Mavropanos is not proven in the Prem League by any stretch , bounced around in Germany ,Maguire is and JWP has had a decent start. Long way to go for any player yet

But if West Ham really wanted him the deal was there to be had but clearly didn’t want him enough to pay what was needed to the player or the club. His contract doesn’t run out until 2025 or 2026 depend which report so it’s not going to be a cheap buy for an established premier League CB

Bounced around? A loan to one club, then loaned to another who signed him

That's hardly bouncing

3 solid seasons at one club out of 4 years in Germany.
