This thread probably shows why England players struggle when pulling on the England shirt, the amount of negative talk is incredible.

The vast majority of talk is putting players down and knocking them, yes the reasons are valid but it hardly helps does it.

Should we be playing a CB who doesn’t play for his club and is likely not to, no we shouldn’t. Henderson is past his prime and moved to a league where the quality is lower, but he has never let Southgate down, is vastly experienced and a leader on the pitch so he keeps his place for now. Whether you agree with the selections or not, as supporters of the National team you should be giving encouragement to these players and not knocking them down.

The main problem here is that we have a manager in Southgate who is too conservative, we have players with great potential who would love to have someone lead them and encourage them to be creative. It’s difficult when you don’t train week in week out like clubs do, but I would love a coach to stick two fingers up at the press who are so keen to rip the team apart at any opportunity and play some open attacking football.

In Gareth's defence (what am I saying!) it has long been wailed "why can't they do it in an England shirt" and I don't know the answer. Is it fear of failure? The fact the press will rip them limb from limb if they truly mess up? Or have we never had a manager who can manage a group of talented players, from different clubs, and make them gel and give them confidence?

It’s all a small window into why some don’t “support” England - the press rip the players apart and look for scapegoats , it’s london centric when they should play at the stadiums all over the country and there is still far too many who can’t see past what club the player plays for or used to play for.

The country has had multiple top quality managers and haven’t managed to gel a team since maybe Venables. Southgate got the job by default and being blunt a lucky run in the WC got him it permanently but he has held the team back

I disagree. The majority is putting the manager down.

As long as your not "Xing" players negative comments and just discussing like you would down the pub or in clubs up and down the country it doesn't make a blind bit of difference

They don't see it . They don't hear it. They don't feel it.

International weeks are hated in England, I wonder why? Performances like that are enough to put you off football completely.

At least Henderson got a full 90 minutes. He was absolutely useless, but apparently he talks a good game. Meanwhile, rest the aging Bellingham
Hendo is REALLY good at clapping & pointing 😝

I'm usually in support of Southgate but tonight I couldn't understand why he took off Bellingham and not Henderson.
OK, Bellingham wasn't having his best game but did some hard work and always capable of something special.
However, I think some of the team let him down though. Bellingham put Maddison through with the perfect ball but he fluffed it, also other times his control let him down. As did Chilwell with his control, he didn't once take anyone on down the wing, he always passes the ball either inside or back.
As Amanda pointed out, Kyle Walker was the only bright light and was pleased for him to get his first England goal.
I'm sure we'll still qualify. 👍

They don’t see what is written on somewhere like here, but they can’t avoid what is written in the press.

I could agree, if we were talking about a kids' team, but these people are extremely highly paid professionals representing their country. Normal football supporters are travelling around the world at great expense to support them. They deserve better.
The England cricket philosophy has been a breath of fresh air - it's not just about winning trophies, we are in the entertainment business.
The England football ethos could do with an overhaul.

Gaz ball, that's what we're after!

In what context do you think travelling supporters deserve better?

If you think the players don’t put in the effort and try their best, then absolutely the fans deserve better. However, I do not agree that the fans deserve an attacking exciting brand of football or a good performance. England fans deserve that no more than a fan of any other country.

And on the point on a kids team vs highly paid professionals, the professionals should be able to block it out, but at the end of the day we are still relying on the strength of an individual’s mind to be able to perform under such scrutiny.

England played “entertaining“ footy for years. PL style end to end and got nothing.
out current style in cricket is pure luck we win. All out attach isn’t enough for first class count level

Which years are you talking about? I started watching football in the late 70s and, apart from the occasional one-off match, have no recollection of an entertaining England football team.

In the context that I find it hard to believe antibody could think that was a satisfactory footballing performance.
England have been FIFA ranked in the top 10 pretty much forever, yet they continue to play like they fear losing more than they want to win.

Whilst qualify is very important, this is the chance to try something new and give the players who are going to actually play the chance to stake their claim to the first team shirt

Maigure is 30 so can still be claimed as in the plans..surely a 33 year old (will be 34 by the time the euros come around) not playing in a big league , Henderson offers little of what we don't already know? It was bad enough they called him up let alone gave him 90 mins

Bellingham and rice are the future

Surely foden or Maddison in the 10 with them behind and rashford wide would have been a better use of our talents

Finally from Jill Scott

“I’m a Jordan Henderson fan but now I know I wouldn’t be welcome if I wanted to watch him play football”

Has anybody said it was a satisfactory performance?

The England goal summed up what is wrong with the England team. A centre forward has to drop 50 yards to deliver a pass for a right back to score. Just think about that. Shouldn’t Englands best centre forward for 20 years be on the end of those passes. Shouldn’t Foden be giving him them balls for 90 minutes. It’s a bit hard if he is sat on the bench.
That England team last night played Championship standard Tika football. It was shocking and yet we are to get behind that. Am sure the players put in their best, but that’s the point. It’s not the best players. It’s has beens and non players for there clubs giving their best. Players that don’t have the hunger coz they know they will be playing. So what does that say to Foden, and others.

Sadly Southgate will only ever pick his "mates". He won't ever drop Maguire or Philips from his squad, even if they were in a wheelchair. He has followed the clamour for Maddison and Grealish, and allows a centre forward to go to the half way line all too often.
I said ages ago that always picking the same players even if they aren't a club first team pick only sends out one message to the tallented young players coming through.
Why do you think Harvey Barnes is now considering swapping over to play for Scotland?
