United desperate beyond belief for anyone who can finish, and the midfield really lacks balance. Casemiro really struggling on his own.

The bright point for me was Onana. A couple of really good stops and some of his distribution was absolute quality. It was those receiving it who were the problem.

The aim now has to be to get MacTominay and Maguire out the door and reinvest that money.
 
Don’t know if it’s true but talking to some city fans.
They were on about Tonali. Apparently he asked the Newcastle players for a nice place to eat in Newcastle. They sent him to a Wetherspoons. 🤔😳😂😂😂

They have spent over £1.5 bn in the last ten years - around £1bn net , spent fortunes on player after player and it’s not changed with the club spending £80plus mil on the likes of Antony

There was that stat that the current Utd manager has spent the same net in 12 months as Klopp has since he arrived at the club

Is it just spending bad money on top of bad money

It’s really hard to see where that money has been spent in terms of real quality in the team. Rashford is prob the stand out player and he was a youth product

Looks like need some serious quality adding - front three , midfield and CB

They have to start recruiting and spending better , something is rotten within your recruitment , from a team that used to bring in players very well to one of the worst that’s about - and it’s not always just about spending as big as possible

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make!? You were responding to Nevilles point Utd need to spend money. You have just said they need more quality, and suggested 5 players. Which would cost money. So, you agree with Neville.

Are you simply trying to come across as smart by mentioning Utd havn't made good signings in last 10 years, spending lots in process? I don't know why, as every single person on this forum already knows that
 
Spurs looked like a team in transition, United should have scored first half when they were on top, they had so much room on the left hand side , Spurs trying to play out from the back caused themselves problems.

This is the way the manager wants to play and must say they seemed more composed second half.

Some positive signs at last and it’s going to be a season of highs and lows I think but at least it’s going to be enjoyable to watch.

Absolutely true, the pictures are out there. Spoons in Gosforth, the ice cream van was Tynemouth I believe. The beauty of the Spoons gag is that they told him he'd have to book so there is a booking name badge with Tonali on it 🤣

The wise sages up here have their money on Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff but they haven't fessed up yet 🤣.

But United haven’t spent “that money” on “this team”, Phil.

The £80m plus spent on Maguire was nothing to do with ETH. Neither was the £50m plus spent on Fred, the £70m plus on Sancho. This list is endless.

Those ludicrous sums of money were spent by a club floundering with no tangible transfer policy, adopting a scattergun approach and trying to appease the fans with marquee signings giving absolutely no thought as to where they’d shoehorn those players in to a system. Angel di Maria anyone?

If the club still needs to spend money, that is because they still have to try and right a decade of awful wrongs. But in doing that United will continue to have to pay over the odds to get in the players the manager wants, because the world and his wife knows we need them. I’m quite sure nobody wanted to pay over £70m for Antony. But we are where we are.

ETH has a massive job on his hands. It’s certainly going to take a lot longer than the 13 months he’s been in the job. And I happen to think those 13 months have seen huge progress off the field, which will hopefully filter through to performances on it once the manager has his own squad in place.

Finally, Rashford. Oh dear. Never been a striker, never will be. His stats last year had me thinking of Emile Heskey when he banged a few goals in early on in his Liverpool career. Anyone who understood his game knew he wasn’t the next Ian Rush, the same as most United fans I know remain very unsure when it comes to Marcus Rashford. I know Roy Keane was hugely critical of Martial’s introduction today, but the fact remains that, on his day, the Frenchman is an infinitely better finisher than Rashford. Unfortunately Martial’s day has passed.

I will never be a Rashford fan. If anyone came in with an offer for him I would not lose sleep if United cashed in. He is not a player I would ever want to see the manager build a side around.

A very good post indeed and the bit where Utd are now paying over the odds. That is what City had to do to get to the top table. Pep this week has now said “ we do not pay over the odds now”.
That said. How good is Kovacic. Why did Chelsea let him go😳

The point I was making is that nothing has changed - if you were paying over the odds for real game changing quality then you could understand- but even that’ £500mil in the past 12 months it’s hard to see where the real quality is

£80mil on Antony is more than paying over the odds - he is a shocking player nowhere near suited for the Prem

£70mil for Mount , that’s double the price that we paid for MacAllister and Mount isn’t anywhere near that level

£80mil plus for a forward that’s scored 18 goals in his career at the top level - prob not even the top level

Even the amount spent on Casemiro at his age and injury £60plus mil

And was is £60mil on Martinez ?

It doesn’t seem to be any different than when it was under OGS or Van Gaal or Mourinho - a lack of identity on the pitch , no real leadership, doesn’t appear to be any direction . No manager worth his Salt has Fernandes as their captain

To be fair, we could be saying the exact same thing about Liverpool, if anybody actually wanted to sign for them :)

Well they conceded 4 less goals but also scored 17 goals less but then last season was our worst season for 6 years and would expect the ambition to be a bit more than just being above us during a shockingly bad season.


And in the current Newcastle/ City game - how come Bruno is not being sent off , that’s the same tackle MacAllister was sent off for 🤷‍♂️

Is inflation running at a higher rate in your world than everywhere else in the UK, Phil?!

Mount cost £55m, not £70m. Casemiro was £10m less than you have suggested. There’s no need to inflate the fees to try and prove your point, not least because I agree that United have been mugged off when it comes to transfer fees for as long as I can remember.

Casemiro was expensive given his age, but I genuinely struggle with the concept that he was not a significant upgrade on Fred and McTominay. Lisandro Martinez is a massive improvement on Maguire and Lindelöf.

Antony is a young player in only his second season in this country. Mount is yet to complete two full games. And Højlund hasn’t even started a game, and is already being written off?

Anyone who actually follows United, rather than their bitterest historical rivals, can clearly see that things are changing steadily for the better. The club has a manager who has instilled discipline where previously the tail was very much wagging the dog. He played a blinder getting shot of Ronaldo, and has clearly identified the players he wants rid of and is trying to manage them out the door, rather than retaining them needlessly. Anyone can see Fred wasn’t at the level required - gone. Maguire nowhere near good enough - being squeezed out. Ditto McTominay. De Gea not the sort of modern keeper the manager wants - gone and replaced by a keeper who was perhaps United’s best player today, and is already looking like a real step in the right direction, given the style of football ETH wants to play.

Sorry, whilst I agree with your comments regarding the captaincy, the rest of your final paragraph belies a real lack of any real understanding of the club I have supported for nearly fifty years.
