It waa the top 2 back then correct, but back then that excluded Liverpool as they had an extended club ban. Durng that season, 3rd was enough as long as Liverpool finished above us but then Uefa lifted the ban on Liverpool in europe in the week of the 17th April ( havnt got the exact date).

It was a huge kick in the teeth and there is a strong belief in SE London that our Chairman took a compensation payment to go 'quietly' and accept this decision despite it being a few weeks before the end of the season.

Bitter....yep?! 😉

That's how I remember it.

We were so deflated when the news came out and  YES I still bear a grudge

Only if spent wisely. Enough teams have wasted that and more over time, and will do again. City have had a great run of buying, that doesn't last forever.
It has already started making a profit. Spent last season £150 million, returned £162 million. By my reckoning another 150 years and we will get our investment back 😉😁

Why would there be compensation payment when the club didn’t finish in a qualifying spot ?

The club followed the same process that allowed the rest of the English clubs back into Europe the season before - UEFA voted to allow the clubs to re enter apart from Liverpool who had to re apply - they did 12 months later and were allowed back in , there was always the chance that would happen providing fans were behaved during that year.

If the process was ok for the previous year when clubs were allowed back in the surely it was ok for Liverpool to follow that process as well

I can understand the likes of Everton and Arsenal who missed out on playing in the European Cup or Coventry City and Wimbledon who missed out on Cup Winners Cup being angry and put out because they finished in qualifying places or won a trophy to qualify

But a grudge because a ban was uplifted on an appeal

It really surprises me that they've let Gundogan and Bernado Silva's contracts run down to be honest! I cant see where your profit comes from this summer... flogging Cancelo doesn't look like it will be easy either!

Does concern me, the talk last summer was the reason we got paquata was because Silva stayed at citeh so he became available as they were lining him up as replacement.

Please don't take him 🙏 lol 😭

Absolutely - the whole thing stank

Why ?

The club appealed in the same way English football as a whole did the season before and UEFA voted to allow the clubs back in ?

We got a year longer ban than everyone else which was reduced from 2 when they appealed

Because of what Liverpool did that night, around 20 clubs finishing in qualifying positions to play in Europe in that following 5 years lost the right to do so through no fault of their own, and then the powers that be decided to reduce the extra ban on Liverpool from 2 to 1, so Palace became another loser - all the clubs who lost out have a right to be angry

Liverpool didn’t do anything that night - a portion of the fans caused what happened

other clubs finished in positions that meant they qualified for Europe if the ban wasn’t there , Everton and Arsenal won the league , Coventry and Wimbledon won the cup - Palace finished outside the qualifying spots , Man Utd missed out on UEFA - 20 clubs didn’t miss out because of the ban

Palace were only potentially qualifying because of the extra ban for Liverpool , im not aware there was any guarantee or promises that someone would replace Liverpool if they qualified ( just as the season before )

English FA appealed to allow the clubs to return which I’m guessing you’re ok with and Liverpool followed that same process , they appealed and UEFA voted and allowed them to return a year earlier

Palace didn’t miss out because clubs were banned from Europe due to the actions of the fans that night - Palace might have missed out because clubs were allowed back in

Purslow leaves Villa.

Not sure if he's jumped or been pushed but we owe the man a lot of credit for where we are as a club right now.

In the owners we trust though!

Ah Liverpool we’re allowed to appeal but. City cannot with the premier league charges. Hmm. 😉

Gundog wanted a two year deal. City offered one so other parties were interested. City have now offered a two year deal. Others have now offered three. I would be gutted to see him go. Same with Silva. Am not sure his contract has run down though.

You're right about Silva... I saw him linked elsewhere and assumed it was because he was cashing in on a free transfer but he's signed up till 2025!

Would be hard to replace Gundogan but if anyone can its probably Pep :ROFLMAO:

I think UEFA should be your main point of arguement. Heysal was a stadium never fit for purpose, as was the organisation and marshalling. It could have been any other team that night as the ground wasn’t safe, but unfortunately the reputation of English fans abroad carried through.

hahahahaha I mean I think he will sort it.. he knows a thing or two about football...

Also tends to let players go at the right time and has the replacement within the ranks already - maybe Foden fills the role next year rather than playing out wide?

The only weird signing I think he's made is Phillips..

There are no excuses for what happened that night , it was a combination of poor administration from UEFA and disgraceful actions from the Fans - it was the final straw on what was called the English disease at the time with hooligans rife wherever England teams both club and country went. Some Fans were rightly charged and punished for their actions

And that’s why all clubs and not just us were banned and told to clean it up and a number of clubs suffered because of what happened.

But I can’t see what Palace would be aggrieved ( never finished in a confirmed qualifying spot ) at unless they think Liverpool should never have been allowed back in but they were just like all the other clubs and we also missed out on challenging for a number of European Cups in that time - the likes of Barnes and Beardsley team would have had a great chance

Yep I'm not sure where Phillips fit as it would seem to be Rodri's role and he's had a great season. Maybe Pep had some doubts there.

I forgot in all the bathing in glory how refreshing it was for both Jack and Rodri to say how rubbish they'd played. Pep sets high standards and clearly the players buy into that 100%. Also Pep imploring them to "relax" - he looked so concerned for them, not the team or result, but the individuals who were letting the moment and pressure affect their ability.

I may have said it but I'll repeat it. I love Pep
