It’s a huge mistake.

I hear those here saying that it’s difficult for assistant referees to see who is where when the ball is played but, with respect, this was a dead ball situation and he was looking straight across the line. It really doesn’t get much easier than that for a paid official.

At least three United players, probably four, were clearly offside. There was daylight between them and the last Leicester man. Any official who can’t see that should not be officiating at this level.

It’s just further support to the argument that VAR has made our officials lazy. They are way too reliant on technology bailing them out.

That imo is the only smallest potential mitigation for him

You could understand if it was a tight one but it’s nowhere near that - before VAR IMO they raise that flag the minute the ball is played in

Either way he imo shouldn’t be running a line again

The offside still goes on. I get the linesman didn't see Maguire offside, and that was the mistake.

Seeing the others offside is irrelevant. I've no doubt he saw the Utd player furthest in offside position. But, it isn't an offence if the player isn't interfering with play.

I wonder how many on here have ever reffed a match or run the line.
I'll tell you now, it's bloody difficult.
It’s almost like they are constantly trained and paid to do the job to the highest quality available due to the fact their actions are very key to multi million pound businesses

If it’s too hard for some to be unable to see a basic offside then maybe they picked the wrong career

I did used to run a line in my younger years when I had to pack up playing because of a back injury. Did it for about four years every weekend before I rediscovered golf.

Yes, it’s difficult. But let’s not make excuses for that error last night. It really didn’t fall into the difficult to call bracket. It wasn’t even close.

Do Championship and League 1, 2 sides use goal line tech?

I knew the FA Cup wasn't using VAR yet. But I assumed goal line tech was automatically available at many grounds, and they'd use it as it has been around for years and pretty quick and full proof

But Maguire wasn’t even obscured from his view. He was the closest player to him when the free kick was taken, and was clearly offside. I don’t see how the linesman can’t have seen it.

I get that the other United players being in an offside position is irrelevant. I’m not suggesting otherwise. But I’m really surprised that anyone, anywhere, is suggesting that the error was anything other than an absolute whopper.

As I said, he saw Maguire. But everyone behind Maguire would have been difficult to see who is who. How many players were in a line. He is eye level, he can't look from above to see all the shirts.

I just thought I'd offer a bit of balance. The officials are trained, they make mistakes. Sack them and replace them, the replacement will make mistakes. Any of us tried it for a week or two in PL, we'd be an embarrassment most likely.

Had Maguire been onside, no one would have complained. So why another poster circled the Utd player miles ahead of play baffled me, especially after dismissing my initial response as "waffle", then demonstrating they don't know the offside rule

I did mention earlier About the FA CUP and David and Goliath. It’s mint. Glad Birmingham are going up, they could of been tricky for City next season 😁
