I guess Southgate must be luckiest man alive then! It seems everything he’s ever done is because other teams are easy or going through bad times or got out the wrong side of the bed!

It’s certainly been a huge factor. That’s pretty much undeniable if you look at the tournaments in a bit of detail.

Okay.

2018 in Russia, we finished second in a group including a decent Belgium side, Panama and Tunisia. Belgium, the only decent team in that group, beat us. We then scraped past Colombia on penalties, beat Sweden, and lost to Croatia. So, the only two half decent teams we came up against beat us. I don’t call that competing at the highest level.

The Euros in 2021, with home advantage, we edged through a group including Croatia, the Czech Republic and Scotland. Two 1-0 wins and a 0-0 draw with Scotland during a group campaign which was very nearly beyond us. In the knockout rounds we got royally carried away after beating a Germany side which was probably the worst I have seen in my lifetime and then, having beaten Ukraine and Denmark, we bottled it against Italy in the final.

Moving on to the last World Cup we then had a breeze of a group including USA, Iran and Wales, and yet still needed to win the last game to be sure of a place in the knockouts, as we could only draw with the USA. Having beaten Senegal, we then lost as soon as we met a decent side, France.

Surely you can see the pattern! In 2018 we lose against the only two half decent teams we played against, when most observers argued we could not have had an easier route to the final.

In 2021, having reached a final with home advantage and gone 1-0 up we absolutely bottled it against an Italian side which, again, was probably the sternest test we faced. Forget Germany that year, they were woeful.

And then in the last World Cup once again, as soon as we met a decent side we came unstuck.

So I would argue that my assessment that we do not compete at the highest level is actually pretty fair. In the latter stages of the last three tournaments, as soon as England have faced a team you could argue was in the higher echelons of the game at that time, or maybe even not that good, we have lost.

That’s not being competitive. Quite the opposite.
I would add to your very good assessment it was tactics that was lacking.

All those sides were beatable if GS had any tactical awareness during the games but he’s like a rabbit in the headlights.

There can be an endless debate about whether England would be a better team if we played to our arguable strength and focused more on our skill going forward. It could be that this is simply not the case, who knows.

What I do know is that we have 2 friendlies coming up. Maybe in one or both, change it up and see how we perform with only one holding midfielder and more focus on our attacking skills. See what happens.
I think it is
City are not great at the back if you get at them
Liverpool have their problems if you get at them.

But teams don’t go at them because they are cautious of a drubbing.
That’s how GS thinks ,he thinks all teams are like City and Liverpool.

But what both have in common is goals that’s what wins games .

I have not idea what you are saying or seeing but it's not the same as us. I am pleased you are happy and don't think we could do better, the rest of us are not and you need to make better arguments for you point of view.Everyone else is posting details and points to support GS being useless and you just say no he is not.

Blind Faith really helps no one, look at Belgium adn Bobby brown shoes, as an Everton supporter I would have bet my life that Belgium would screw up and they did. To win stuff you need the right man and GS is not it, based on previous results.
It’s not blind faith, it’s realism! Southgate was never the right choice, the sooner he goes the better, his style of Football is awful. He is not getting sacked or leaving before the Euros, we can guess 90% of his squad now!
What has kept him in the job is his results, whether that has been him being the luckiest man ever, I don’t know.

As a fellow Everton fan, please tell me how we’ve faired since the fans wanted him out after finishing 12th?

Whether it be Club or Country fans want their team to succeed, sometimes though, becareful what you wish for.😬

The point being, we may be over egging the current squad, very few players in the current England 11 would be everybodies choice, Pickford is a perfect example.

Are we really that good because of (in my opinion) we really only have 3-4 World Class players, a few others may become that, but not yet.
How many international teams have more than 3/4 truly “world class players”?

Welcome back to the forum Paul 👍🏻

I look forward to the future England manager that wins every game 3 or 4 nil playing all the top teams en route to winning every comp.
You pretty much have that right. Southgate is one of the luckiest men alive. Not indifferent to how Solskjaer was when Utd gave him a full time job as manager

To be fair, was their display in the recent final v Spain less toothless than England's men against Croatia or Italy? The similarities were sadly there to see.
They were but they were beat by a better team and at least tried to play decent football. The team has gone from a boring Phil Neville aka Gareth Southgate style of play to one that’s polar opposites of his football. The women’s manager also has a proven track record of winning. Something no manager has done since Sir Alf Ramsey.

Ok this is very annoying and should be addressed

How long have we known this round of fixtures will be slim because of the games postponed? A long while

So today we have no 12:30 game as it's arsenal Vs Chelsea ..

Tomorrow we have no games on TV in England in the premier league

We have a 2pm kick off (west ham Vs villa) but not on TV

We only have 4 games this weekend

All 4 could be shown

Links back to what I said on the sky thread

It's why I begrudge the fees they charge .. not even bothering on "super Sunday"

It is annoying…but there are 3 brilliant games of Rugby on TV today and I intend to watch every minute of them. 😁

How was it the other night btw, for your Dad, did the people in front of you sit or stand?

He got told to sit down 🤣🤣🤣 we were back of the lower bit and he was the shortest guy on our row lol and he was slow to sit down once

Cracked me up

To be fair we only stood and celebrated for the goals or chances

lol… that’s normally my dad telling people to sit down. 😁

We are going to the Leverkusen game, hopefully we are still in it by then, if we have done a Brighton I can see my dad not going.

Going to be a tough draw but Moyes record in Europe for us is fantastic

Depends a lot if Emerson is back as Alvarez out is huge

Stupid tackle by him 🤬 although maybe he was told be here for the second leg

Ridiculous foul from regulion

Took forever to give but correct decision in the end
