Cesspit ???? Nothing like a good old derogatory remark to decend a thread.

Fwiw 3 generations of my family have been going to the "cesspit" but at least we don't rent it from the council and have to sit miles from the pitch.

Maguire is a good old fashioned centre back. If your looking for someone to roll up their sleeves, play with passion, play for the shirt, head it away and boot it into the stands there's few better. He'll be an asset to West Ham.
Oi we rent it from the council 😉😂👍

Same as Ledley King then.
Unfortunately youncant be put in the top bracket for 2 seasons. No matter how good thise 2 years were

2 ?

Been at the club since 2018 - played 5 and half seasons and was superb for the majority bar some periods last season

His first 2 and half seasons was superb , then injured for a season but superb again 21/22 - he had periods were along with the rest of the team his levels dropped in some games

But he has been superb for us for more than two seasons

This just isn’t true. He wasn’t as good as you think he was for as long as you think he was.

The short sighted nature of football fans who put him alongside the like of Terry, Ferdinand, Campbell et al as one of the best CBs in the PL era is really showing now.
I don't think we'll ever see centre backs like those guys again (and adding Vidic to your list). Being a centre back now doesn't mean the same thing as it did in that era. They were proper defenders. Nowadays the priority seems to be on starting attacks from the back and hopefully they can defend a bit as well.

You never watched Alan Hansen then?

Ferdinand certainly wasn’t far off the modern style of centre back.

Not quite the same level but Carvalho along side John Terry was also very capable on the ball but didn’t get the plaudits he deserved.

Arguably Ledley King as well tried to further the more stylist CB but having a body made of glass cost him, too.

Yes but they could all defend as well, that was my point. Nowadays you seem to only get one or the other. Quintessential modern defender is John Stones.
'Isn't he good on the ball?'
Yea but can he defend?
'Sort of! He's alright. He's quick!'

Firstly yes, I watched him talking on match of the day with Mark Lawrenson when I was young. 😄 Secondly, he predates all of the ones we've discussed so not sure what point you're making.
He played in a time defenders were just that, but Alan Hansen could well be classed as your ball playing defender of PL times.
There were ball playing defenders before the PL existed, or you were out of nappies:)

That's fair enough. As above though, my point was that nowadays the focus is on ball-playing defenders first and foremost, who can't really defend like the defenders of yesteryear. Who's the best in the league now? Ruben Dias? I'm not sure he would have stood out if he played in the early 2000s.

But you overlook that the game will always evolve. Years ago, a shot at goal generally went straight, whereas now that’s generally rare. Is that because the balls are more technical and lighter, boots lighter and more technical, the players more skilful or less able to hit a straight shot.?

The best CB I have seen playing within the top flight in the UK

Up with the likes of Cannavaro and Nesta as the best I have seen
