the FLOP

Wise words D4S. I would add, in a serious moment, I only go to the flop in the classic case of ball close to a bunker, ball needs to get over bunker, balls needs to stop quite quickly. I can't get spin on a ball so my best bet is the flop. I don't use it instead of a chip and run or if the flag is at the back of the green in relation to the bunker I am going over. I have noted in a number of interviews that when asked to give one tip to amateurs the most frequent reply is "when around the green get the ball on the floor as quickly as possible". I follow that advice and so don't flop unless necessary.

Tried a Flop shop at the weekend, it failed miserably. I was hitting off of a Mat, it spun waaay right and about a yard off of the ground. But at least it cleared me of the obstacle in front for my next shot.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Yeah when I hit one right, it felt great. Strangely, like I’d rolled the back of the club over the ball somehow. Then it lept up. I was so tempted to look up early to see the flight of the ball and how it reacted to the club. Thanks for the tips Gary. I was really only playing them off a favourable lie and felt comfortable with the ball forward of centre. Only had my wedges a week or so. Just building my friendship with them. I’m always looking to play sensible golf as titleist3 and drive4show suggest. Think I’ll privately practice the flop then if the situation arises when out with my pals one day, i'll melt their faces with a perfectly executed flop…or more likely hoon it over the back of the green.

I hardly ever use the flop shot. Only use it if there are no other options. Execute it well and it's great but you need to execute it well otherwise you're going to be dropping more shots than necessary.

Professionals all have the same opinion of the flop shot (i.e. don't use it unless you have no option otherwise), I think they know what they are talking about.
