The club manufacturers next move.....

There are lots of advancements in the area of material science around polymers that actively do things.

I suspect fancy things club happen like clubhead materials that glow when you hit the sweetspot or things like that.

hmmm I like the idea of small led's in the face that glow redder and redder the more you hit them, so it looks red hot, great for twighlight golf as well.

Haven't Callaway tried something similar already in the Diablo Octane black along the line of a polymer that's stronger than titanium?

I would agree with SB on this in as far as the different materials that will be used in the constructions of not only the heads but shafts too.

Actually it would be something a lot more simple, polymers that fluoresce on contact already exist. Either that or something piezoelectric connected to a polymer that fluoresces with a small electric charge would work too.

Imagine the plastic insert in the back of the clubhead glowing if you pure one.

Even more complicated could be something that can collect data right from the clubface and report it back to a computer somehow.

Personally I think having the correct kit for you is the most important thing in golf. If it is not the right kit for you then you will not play to your potential. Perfect example is me changing my shaft in my driver. I am hitting it 20 yards further and 10 yards straighter. So having the correct kit will make a huge difference.

But has all the advances in golf really improved the weekend golfer. It is easy to see the difference it has made to the professional game. I was just looking on a site and the average handicap has barely changed since the mid 80's when technology really started to change in golf. So has it really helped us or filled the pockets of the big companies.

The fact is that golf equipment sales are driven by Driver Sales and the manufacturers are now Maxed out as to the improvements they can make to driver heads according to the rules of the R&A and the USGA.
We have therefore seen improvements in Shaft technology and the latest incarnation of adjustable heads.
The sad thing is that the companies are now reduced to trying to sell their drivers on colour. Taylormade have just brought out their new Driver in "New Black" Cobra are going multicolours Callaway the same. They are having to get really innovative in marketing to get the public to buy new product which does not always have any significant benefit to the player.

heads will start to get smaller again....like they used to be.....

everything is done in cycles

I'd say that if you are a good golfer with a repeatable swing then getting fitted with the best equipment for your swing will improve your game and increase the chances of you reducing your handicap. Likewise, if you are a happy hacker then the increased forgiveness you get with new clubs as opposed to older ones on off centre shots that most happy hackers hit, will also improve your game and increase the chances of you reducing your handicap. The degree to which this happens is questionable, and of course new equipment is not a substitute for poor technique.

But golf is a hard game, and any help the manufacturers can give when it comes to people hitting the ball further/straighter can only be good for participation and good for the game in the long run.

That may be true but have in mind this info----
"The average handicap for men and women is coincidentally 15.2 for both. The average score for all amateur golfers is over 100. Why the difference? People that maintain a legitimate handicap are much more avid golfers, hence they play more and are more successful at the game. Keep in mind that your handicap is not an indicator of what you usually score. It's an indication of what you're CAPABLE of scoring. Think of it as what you may score on one of your better days."

Taken from the blog Average Golfer

Maybe for the Pro's and the very low handicappers but not for the average player. have you tried hitting small headed woods consistently? Not easy

yes!

it's the bohemoth drivers and FW's that I find difficult, feels and looks like I'm swinging a sledgehammer. Best club for me is the Callaway steelhead 4+ :whoo:

The manufacturers don't care about significant improvements to the player. They care about making the player think he will get significant improvements. They will keep coming up with gimmicks, probably re-incarnations of previous gimmicks and many will fall for it.

Good post. It isn't about improving things for the golfer. It is about improving things for the shareholders.

It was 99% joke and 1% little dig at those who still think that a new club will cure their hook/slice/duff/top.
Obviously still too early for humour
sailing close to the wind BOB,you are going to break the hearts of the 18+ h/c hackers who keep telling us how to play different shots and glorify in telling us how their latest set of wonder irons/woods have slashed .1 of their h/c in the last 6 months, you will be telling us they will introduce a ball that goes were you should hit it instead of were it ends up.

Wasn't Phil Mickelson guilty of this when recently using the TM SLDR to try & cure his driving problems?
