The club manufacturers next move.....

Up until now, they have been making shafts better and better and longer and straighter according to the machines and Jo Public has been trying to find a great shaft to match his/her wonky swing.
Whats the point buying a superb shaft that works at it's best when swung perfectly on the machine. How is it going to react to your less than perfect swing?
I predict as they have probably peaked at making the best shaft possible, they will now start making shafts for the wonky swing. The Charles Berkleys of the golf world.
So, to the wonky swingers out there, stop practicing because soon you will be able to buy a shaft that will convert your rubbish swing into a thing of immense beauty and power.

It will certainly catch on with the lazy golfers who cant be bothered practicing (that obviously doesn't apply to any good folk on this forum of course

Sounds a bit bitter, Bob.

I am sure you would agree that graphite shafts have improved enormously since they first came in, when they were like glorified fishing rods which were very variable from one to the next and you had to wait on them at the top.

Not sure what you mean by wonky swings. If you mean those with swing flaws, then that is a lot of players, including Jim Furyk and a few top pros as well as most of the GM forum membership. If you mean players who can't apply the clubhead with some consistency and power, then that is still a pretty large group, but why not help them? Some of these players take lessons too, but may still never have anything but a wonky swing. Would you like to cast them out into the darkness? I see no harm in developing a shaft that will help them get the ball in the air with a better chance of it going roughly the right direction. There is no shaft that will ever be developed that will make a once a week duffer hit it like Rory McIlroy.

I think you (or perhaps it was someone else) who made the argument here that despite all the golf technology average handicap and score is not coming down. So if that is the case, there is nothing to fear.

I have just come in from bending all my clubs and can confirm my shots are now straight and I have added 75 yards to the distance of each club. I now have to putt from 80 yards off the green ;-) Thanks Bob

I picked up on your humour but your thread does provoke some interesting thoughts. Compare a modern club to one from 50 years ago and the ease of use now compared to then is staggering. Go back even further and a half decent player now would have little or no chance of hitting a reasonable shot with old equipment.

So what is left to be developed? We have bigger, more forgiving heads and more consistent shafts. To me, the current challenge presented by modern courses and equipment is probably about right but I'm sure the manufacturers see it differently.

What are they going to come up with next.

Size-wise there's nothing they can do with drivers. They can't make fairways any bigger as you won't be able to use them off the deck. Irons are surely as forgiving as they can be - you can only perimeter-weight so much...

Adjustability of irons will come soon, adjustable putters are here already.
Maybe adjustable shafts - with a wrenchable bit that changes the stiffness or kickpoint.......

Whatever it is,it wont last long,they will soon move onto the next new thing.
I played with a guy this morning who had an RBZ rescue,he was hitting it ok.however he didnt like the sound,eh.
In the end he had started to hit it worse,purely because the sound of the club had got to him.
Now hes looking for a new one,madness

Silly alloys with things like Iridium, Scandium or Plutonium I guess.

I do think adjustable irons will come in at some point. Don't see what else they can tweak. Wedges are restricted on their grooves, drives are already adjustable and and even putters are now switchable.

Lets face it every one if you can chip your score comes down if you Cant' you handicap goes up. You can hit it 300 + yards but chipping is where it is won and lost

I made that mistake of buying new shinies before i was ready, so i kinda agree with bob, although ive had ashed load of lessons from pros in the past and that did me no good either! Only way to improve is course experience in my case, everyone different etc though.


I reckont they will continue to tweak club head shapes and decorative designs in cavities, ive already copyrighted aerodynamic 'spoilers' for drivers, just in case!
