The Best Courses

thanks herb, I wasn't having a go, it just sometimes feels that people are against new starters. It's more a respect 'thing', than a how long you've been playing 'thing'. anyway, just going to get on the blower to my nan and arrange a weekend's stay up in greenock, I might leave it until spring though!

No probs, its often myself who appears as though Im having a go when Im not.lol. I seem to be able to manage it when talking as well as typing .lol. Its true about the greens though, some are very deceptive to the eye, always remember if unsure putting that they roll towards the water.

My three top couses I have played:

Kings Course at Gleneagles. Once described as a James Braid masterpiece has it all really.

Montrose Medal. A magnificent stretch of marvellous natural ground which depicts how the game was born." - Ben Crenshaw

Rosemount Blairgowrie.

Wild rover ......you have my admiration!!
Lot of my extended family are forces!
Just had a great weekend in Cumbria, where my cousins man is ex KSOSB and misses them like hell!!
God bless you all !!!!!!!! :)

Such a hard topic this to define and explain my favourite courses would give me a headache and take a rather long time. I enjoy different courses for different reasons.

Machrie on Islay is simply awesome, great course, greens, fun, views the lot.

Machrihannish, in my opinion is so under-rated its unbelieveable, one of the best links courses in Britain and doesnt get the true praise it deserves because its a c*nt to get to.

Kings course Gleneagles is awesome, if I were allowed to design a course I would take so many features and inspiration from this layout, difficult but fair. Great to play for the low and high man.

Loch Lomond, Western Gailes, Spey Valley, Nairn, Nairn Dunbar, my own course Ranfurly Castle all deserve a mention as well.

Fun and scenic wise nothing matches Rothesay, Boat of Garten and Kingussie.

My top courses of the 40 odd courses I've played would be in no particular order -

Kingsbarns
Royal Dornoch
Macrihanish
Old Course
Nairn
Boat of Garten
Cruden Bay
Royal Aberdeen

I can't pick 3 sorry. Saunton east and west may well have been up there but I was a 33 handicap 15 year old when I played them, I can't really remember them but recall it was tough going! :o

Regarding the Old Course I understand some people's reservations but I challenge any golfer to stand on the 1st tee by the R&A clubhouse and not feel like you are standing in a very special place indeed, praying that your slapped hybrid 2r will find short grass! ;)

I can vouch for that!
Only played it once, on a chilly day in March many years ago.
Hardly anybody else on the course and I was in a party of 8 looking forward to taking the place on.
I stood on the first tee, and I swear I had never been so nervous before or since.
I'd hate to be first off in a Ryder cup!
I proceeded to come right over the top on my swing and fatted my drive into the valley of sin by the 18th green!
I can't remember what I club I used to get back to "safety" but I remember taking a bloody divot out the size of an Anaconda!!
I think I had a seven or something down that first hole and couldn't wait to get out of sight and onto the course.
