The Best Courses

not played that many or any famous ones so this probably don't count for much but I played a links course called Newport links in pembrokeshire and it's my favourite so far! It rained a fair bit, was really windy, I struggled big time and I loved it! much better than knocking around flat parks! The views were amazing!

Atticus_F

Where did you get that brilliant postscript?

IT IS BLOODY AMAZING!!(and so very true in this day and age!)

Genius,man!!!

I'd love to tell you I wrote it myself, but it was written by a guy called Charles M Province and it has been shortened and changed slightly before it was sent to me today in an Email. It hit a nerve with me. I felt I had to share it and where better than here?

Atticus_F.........Thank you for sharing such a thought provoking statement!

You (and Charles D)have made me think that I need to educate myself more!

Anyway back to the original thread, courses to play....
1.St.Andrews..atmosphere,history,etc.
2.Royal Birkdale..look terrific.
3.Carnoustie...Looks awesome!

If only I had some money<>? :p

My personal favourites are:

1. St Enodoc, Church course. A great links course on the North Cornish coast between Rock and Padstow.
2. Delamere Forest, Cheshire. Two years away from its centenary, it is a well established heathland gem of a course that plays well all year round.
3. Sandiway, Cheshire. Tree lined fairways make this immaculately maintained 90 year old course a real challenge.

These are picked from courses I have played. I find it impossible to rate a course as one of "the best" if I haven't played it!

Hey this is a good idea.

My favorites played.
St Andrews for the greens alone.
Woodhall Spa both Hotchkin and Bracken.
Sennelager. (memories of) Dont know what its like now but was a very good course.
Mkt Rasen when course is at its best.
Greenock.
Forres(but havent played for years)
Normaby Hall (when its in good nick and not too many beginners )

My fantacy three.
Agusta
Loch Lomond
Carnoustie

You guys ever played any of the courses in Guernsey or Jersey?

Yes...La Moye (twice) and Royal Jersey (eight/nine?) and the (ahem....) not so great one!!

For me, there's no competition.....La Moye gets the big matches, R.J. is the connoisseur's choice.

1. Swinley Forest. Just gorgeous.
2. Forest of Arden. Just plain hard work but worthwhile
3. The Oxfordshire. Just plain long...but good fun

For the record, my top 3 from the few I've played are....

Carnoustie Championship
Montrose Medal
St.Andrews Jubilee

Atticus_F

Have to agree about Montrose, absolutely love it, proper golf!

My top 3 I've played are:-
1. Turnberry Ailsa
2. Emirates GC Dubai (Majalis course)
3. Montrose Links

Top 3 I want to play are:-
1. Wentworth West
2. Muirfield
3. Pebble Beach

By the way Atticus_F, as a member of the armed forces, I love the postscript.

As I can't comment a great deal on courses in Scotland or Ireland, can I suggest a few from Wales?

Royal St. Davids (Harlech)
Aberdovey.....(Old Windy?)
and for the madness of it all.....
Llanymynech - unlikely to get in the top 300 in UK, but always so much fun.

Otherwise, for enjoyment and back local-ish into England...
Enville.....all 27
Blackwell
Little Aston
Beau Desert

none of these would get much of a mention (other than Little Aston being a Peter Allis favourite). But, for quality, value and the "x" factor....hard to go wrong.

I've got loads of family in greenock and thinking about going up for a weekend, do you think its worthwhile? whats wrong with beginners herb? were you an experienced golfer when you started?

Ah Rothesay!Canada hill what a great track then there is The Port and Kingarth too.....3 great courses...The Port is 12 holes with a seperate 18th very strange but great fun indeed. :D

Theres nothing wrong with beginners in general only Normanby is a muni that has a significant number of beginners and when you are looking at a 5 hour plus round of golf it can make any golf course in the world unpleasent.
When I began golf, I knew the basic rules before I played,I had very good basic skills before ever hitting a ball on a course, I immediately waved groups through without hesitation, I had respect for the course and respect for others on the course and my first round was 3 1/2hrs under the guidance of a seasoned player and shooting 93 on a difficult course, tell me how many beginners you think start like that?. The difference today is that too many beginners are beginning EVERYTHING on the course and learning or not as they go along and many have little respect or consideration for others and often have the expectation that THEY should be accepted regardless and it takes time for many to learn, if they do?. I hope that clears it up for you, I dont have a thing about beginners in general, but some courses host far too many at once, many, if not most, unguided and begining in the first time sense.

As far as Greenock goes, if it is still as good as it was a number of years ago it is well worthwhile, dont be deceived by the green they all slope to the water.lol. I played with a ladies champ round there, ex wifes Aunt, if you look up Matty Heuston (spelling?????) on the boards there. That old gal stuffed me lol, she sadly got too old by the time I got a great h/c.

thanks herb, I wasn't having a go, it just sometimes feels that people are against new starters. It's more a respect 'thing', than a how long you've been playing 'thing'. anyway, just going to get on the blower to my nan and arrange a weekend's stay up in greenock, I might leave it until spring though!
