Re: Best Courses - Your Top 3 That You've Played

For me:

St Andrews - the atmosphere, the history, the thinking required (having to get from A to B via C and D (and sometimes E)) - it's just a great place

Royal Cinque Ports - 'easy' going out but so hard coming back whichever way the wind is, get round in 3 hours, great greens

Wentworth West - great layout, great holes, playable, great clubhouse and always great condition

A touch more specific maybe.

My top three are:

Royal County Down: Links, beautiful and tough to score on.

Woodhall Spa Hotchkin: Heathland, beautiful and tough to score on.

Legacy, Bradenton, FL: Toughest opening 5 holes of any golf course I have ever played.

Swinley Forest - Short but tight - and pretty hard to get a game on

Wentworth West - Iconic (think World Matchplay) and I got to play off the back tees the day after a WMP final back in 83

St Andrews - It is golf. OK there are better links courses around but for the sheer package and the challenge it presents to the average golfer

Carnoustie.. a much better course than St Andrews, a real monster. And if the winds up (which it usually is) the back 9 is almost unplayable!!

Blairgowrie (Rosemount).. superb course, play golf surrounded by pine trees, wild deer and red squirrels.

St Mellion... another monster. If you catch it in good condition and you are on your game it's great.
Otherwise, it's a bugger of a course

I played the FSU course last year...basically a college golf course for florida state uni! Its right up there with the best courses that I have played...

Never played any of the major courses but the ambience and the other members attitude made it for me...

on the plus side we had a golf cart with a big red button. This red button would call the drinks cart which would basically be a fully licenced bar on wheels!!

That's one of the issues GOS. Many course look fantastic but are distinctly average to play.
My course for instance is the opposite. I can see where people come from when they say that it's a horrible looking course and in many respects thay're right, but it's always in immaculate condition and if you haven't brought your A game then you're not going to find it there.

For the record, my top 3 from the few I've played are....

Carnoustie Championship
Montrose Medal
St.Andrews Jubilee
