The Belfry

Out of interest does anyone know membership fees at the FOA as I'm thinking of a change?

I wouldnt bother. My pp works there and all the members are leaving because they can never get a tee time because they fill it with corporate players. But to answer your question its 2k a year

Agree with this. Was looking at booking a stay at The Belfry in Jan, but the price was ridiculous if you wanted to play The Brabazon. Decided to book Formby Hall instead, looks amazing, and was WAY cheaper. Brabazon is definitely on the list of UK courses I want to play though, might not be spectacular, but worth it for those few signature holes for me!

That does sound high. The usual rate is 199 for a round on the brab and derby, one nights accommodation with two breakfasts and a dinner

I played in April this year and played the Brab on the Sunday and the PGA on the Monday. 1 nights accommodation with breakfast and it was £175 each. We had a great time and really enjoyed it.

Ahh ok then I'll not bother :) . Struggling to find somewhere local to Cov where the fees aren't extortionate but the course is well kept. Had a look at Oakridge a few weeks ago and it's not of great standard.

I was organising our "Captains trip" a few years ago. For the same deal (2 nights DBB + 3 rounds Sun-Tue) I was quoted £189 at Oulton Hall (Leeds), £184 at Slaley Hall and £329 at the Belfry. Guess where we didn't go? I have played the PGA since which was OK but nothing to rave about. Overpriced and poor value for money IMO. Yes the Brabazon has a (little) bit of history and is no doubt a good track and in good nick etc but I can't ever see me choosing to go there when I could go to so many other very similar venues for a lot less.

Where did you go? I played Oulton Hall earlier this year and whilst it was okay it was a typical corporate course and not one I would rush back to. The Hunting at Slaley is a very nice course, The Priestman less inspiring. Both suffer from poor drainage, avoid in the winter, and can be very slow as again they are filled with corporates who want to play shots 9 & 10 on par 4's rather than picking up. If you had the same choice again I would certainly recommend Slaley but only if at least one round was on The Hunting.

I'm on the verge of giving up on "golf resorts", I've played Celtic Manor, Carden Park, Hawkstone Park, the Belfry, Wychwood & Mottram, and whilst the value isn't too bad when going through Golfbreaks.com I find the courses to be generally uninspiring (especially the 2nd courses), the rounds too slow and I don't enjoy it as much as I should.

So I'm thinking of going to find cheap'ish digs somewhere near to an area with a few top courses, paying more for the golf, but hopefully enjoying that more. Afterall, the golf is the main reason for the trip, not the booze & food.

So the sort of thing I'm looking at is:
Mansfield for Notts, Coxmoor, Sherwood Forest & Lindrick
Leeds for Alwoodly, Moortown, Sand Moor
Christchurch for Broadstone, parkstone, Ferndown
Sheringham & Cromer

Some great comment on here. Thanks all.Playing in Lancs Classic again this year.Great value at £125.Might give Formby Hall a try, doing a good overnight package...it's only up the roadish!!!...Think Belfry can wait...

Not a bad shout. I'll have to look into it. I don't really look towards Birmingham way and never realised that and the FOA were so close to be honest.

I don't know too much handy it would be to you, but I play a client's golf day at Drayton Park (next door to Drayton Manor) each year. It's a nice James Braid course, the pro is a nice bloke and we always have a good day there.

Cool. You should join. That way i can sign in on the cheap

The only thing I don't like is £900 joining fee, plus I want to try it at the weekend as that's when I can play and they don't accept visitors at the weekend according to the website.

Played the Belfry last year played the PGA and the Brabazon really enjoyed it. The hotel room was fine for a base. They were in the middle of the refurb when I went but went with 11 other blokes and had a good time. Especially for approx £100. It is what you make it reasonable courses good company and lots of beers. Funniest thing was there were another group of blokes and one who was over 60 paid for 2 working girls to help him through the lonely night in the hotel. The shock on everyone's face when they walked into the club house was priceless. Better signage around the place would also help.

JamesR - If you can't play one of those in your Leeds selection then I would recommend Moor Allerton. If you want a marginally different location then stay in Harrogate and play Knaresborough, Oakdale and Flaxby. Harrogate is a great base and there are plenty of good courses in that part of the world. I agree with you by the way, you just need to be creative and spend a little time on the internet.

I have lessons at Maxstoke. The 900 can be split and the weekends are strangely quiet. It is busy between 7/8am weekdays

The pro is neil mcewan he'll give you all the advice you need and would let you on weekends if your looking to join

Fantastic course but members are idiots and it can be impossible to get to the club as the roads get filled with theme park guests. It also drains very poorly

As a resident of Notts and having played 3 out of the 4 mentioned that would be a cracking, if a little pricey, trip.

I can believe that. I went on a golf break over an autumn weekend and we had a 5 hour plus round on the Saturday, just getting in before it went dark which was more than a few groups behind us did. And on the Sunday morning there were about 4 groups queuing up on each tee. Not what you want if you are a member I imagine.

Surprised to hear you say that. I think Drayton is very ordinary and certainly not a patch on Maxstoke or, of course, Whittington.
