The all things EV chat thread

Also it was a loan car , the range shown will be based on driving style , I'm making an educated guess that previous loanees made a point of using all 408bhp. I know I do 😂

If I had done the full research on what I bought* I may have had second thoughts based upon constant speed motorway quoted range (approx 65% of max range). Made my first dual carriageway /motorway trip just a few months after buying it and very quickly learnt.

* had an opportunity to buy an extended range MG at the same price at the same time.

It seems a standard journey using an EV over longer distances

It will include stops and recharging at various points along the trip with a variety of prices and length of stop depending on where and how often you stop

I thought it was a fairly decent, balanced article. And he wasn’t shy in saying that public charging is very excessive. Everyone knows that quoted ranges are difficult to achieve, especially if the majority of the journey is motorway driving.

What he fails to mention is that over a year, with the majority of journeys being urban, the average cost would be significantly lower.

It seemed ok to me and just highlighted what most of us know about longer journeys

As you standard day to day travelling on shorter journeys will prob be a lot more cost effective

It's rubbish, I've made some epic journeys and it's easy peasy.
That includes a 2000 mile round trip across Europe, I'm off to the Netherlands in a few weeks and I have no qualms, my EV has a stated range of 262, but in reality I'd probs no go more than 210.
It's not even close to being a balanced article , like I said . It's anti EV tosh

It seemed very balanced with a lot of the good things about EV in the article and mentioning all the things to consider when buying an electric car ?

Charging at home is easy , it’s very cost affective and works very well

At service stations etc it’s not as cheap and time consuming and it’s something that needs to be factored in when driving longer journeys

Don’t bite…

That's the point, it's actually not time consuming and doesnt have to be expensive, and in relation to ice public charging is still comparable or cheaper than petrol diesel.
He says the same old tired tripe about being able to go 700 miles and only needing to stop for 2 mins

How long does it take at a public charger facilities to fully charge a car and how much is it

Which car and battery size ? Typically you don't fully charge, rather it's quicker to go 80% as the charge curve drops of at that point . A modern EV can go from 10 to 80 in about 15 mins.
Price wise , it's easy enough to get about 50p per kwh, so 60kwh will cost you 30£

Fast charging for you 30 mins quick charging aren’t cheap

So what he and others who own EV have said is fair

You've posted 2 non working links.
As someone who's driven an EV for some time now, I am very comfortable in confirming that the article is drivel, anti EV drivel.
It offers no new insight, just tired tropes.
Do you go to the most expensive petrol station you can find or would you shop about a bit. ?
I know 100% I can rapid charge for less than 50p per kwh. I'm generally not that bothered though, as the pennies I pay at home more than offset the little public charge I ever do.
That said , I'll still look for a cheaper option if I need to.

Links work fine 🤷‍♂️ one of the Gridserve Website and the other Honda

And I go to supermarket for petrol and the long journeys I make don’t require me to get petrol at a service station on a motorway which is where the author was charging

How can you shop about a bit on motorway when on a long journey where you need to top up

If I had to add petrol on the way to a destination then I would have to use the expensive petrol stations

The good news is the 5 petrol stations within a mile or so from me have a price difference of 1p

I can comment as I had the same 318d and I was lucky to get 40mpg and the 61L tank would cost £85 for 536 miles.
Also the photo of the car charging shows trees with no leaves so obviosly a winter journey (6 deg) not August as claimed

''There is no mainstream EV on the planet right now that can match 700 miles to the tank.''

Not even his BMW
Was your BMW a petrol? It has d on the end so I'd expect diesel but surely you weren't getting under 40mpg in a diesel. Did you just do one mile journeys? That's a terrible economy rate.

I drove to Newquay from Cambridge recently, I looked on the map and saw that I could use the Tesla stop at cribs causeway for 51p per kwh, a 2 mins detour off the M5, same as if I were in an ice car , I'd look for a cheaper stop like a Tesco and probably tie in with lunch stop. Only time I have ever used mway fuel is when it was on expenses.

Diesel owners be like, I can spend £85 in 3 mins 😂 and be on my way .
Just doesn't have the same ring to it 😜
As for me , octopus often give away free electric or cheap electric.
Last night was half price and smart charging was 3.5p per kwh.
That's about £2.35 to take my car from 25 to 100%

Was behind a Tesla tonight - a grey one for a change, so maybe not a sales rep?

It was adorned with a mahoosive black plastic spoiler and matching diffuser. Didn't think you could make those things any uglier than as they roll out of the factory. You can 😁
