Well folks

I am looking for opinions on tempo and how we all find it.

I have a lovely smooth tempo with my irons, and as such I hit them very well, BUT....

Put a driver in my hand, and sometimes a 3wood and I turn into the tasmanian devil!!! My tempo goes to pot and I wanna rip the living daylights out of it!

Any ideas why, or tips to help, or are you the same??

cheers

Tip on tempo - Quite a coincidence but i remember this tip from years ago, "SEVERIANO BALLESTEROS"
Just say this in a normal casual way = SEVERIANO on your backswing, and BALLESTEROS on your downswing.
Does work, as this stops you swinging to fast.

Tom Watson has a similar tempo saying

He says the word Eidelweiss

with the ei being the back swing

The Del Being the top of the backswing

and the Weiss being the downswing

Stops you rushing ....In Theory

I will try to remember that on the range thanks.

I have no idea y I do it, 80% of the time, driver is fine, but the other 20% when I rush, it results in disaster!!

On the day of the death of a legend and hero, saying to yourself Severiano on the backswing and Ballesteros on the downswing, I have found keeps me a good tempo, shame my actual swing never mirrored the great man

No tips for preventing it, but a guess at a reason for doing it.

If you're in the fairway with 150 to go, you might decide that it's a 7 iron.
You know this is how far you hit that club, and you want it again now so absolutely no reason to try to hit it further.

Standing on the tee most of the time you want it as far as possible.

Don't really know :D

How about picking a sensible landing area (distance-wise) and telling yourself you don't want to go past it.
Plus a nice smooth swing out of the sweetspot will generally go farther than a lash with an off centre hit.

1, 2, 3 on the backswing to the top and 4 into the ball.
Some guy analysed the best players swings and found a 3:1 ratio in favour of the backswing in all of them. The speed of the tempo was different but the ratio of backswing to down swing was constant.

Thgere is an app called tour tempo. a mate has it and says its great.

There are three slightly different tempos..and these cover every pro out there he says.

try that.i dont think it is that dear.

sean.

I guess it will be a bit of hardwork and range time to find what works, like i said it is not all the time, but I would love to find a consistant tempo with the big stick, i dont need the extra yards i try for, so I dont know why i go for it sometimes and invariably lose out! silly

thanks again for the ideas.

Here's a wee tip.
Imagine there's someone timing your swing.
Presses start when you begin your backswing and stop when you hit the ball.
Try and make that time a bit longer. :)
