I just wanted to know where the ball should be positioned when teeing it up on par 3's using an iron. I've been told various things and just wanted to get some answers before the weekend. Also what kind of swing should you use?

Thanks in advance

You should maybe find a way that is comfortable for you mate. If you can get out for some practice, try hitting a few different shots and find one you like, so try teeing it high, low and maybe even off the deck.

I like to tee mine about 1cm off the deck and get a good clean strike on the ball, so say it a 150 yard par 3, perfect conditions, I will tee it up and hit an 8 iron with a smooth swing.

Richy, you are obviously new to the game so just be careful about taking on board too much well meant (but bad!!) advice from all and sundry.

First thing is to always tee it up when you have the opportunity, playaround wit the tee height so it suits you best but you don't need to have the thing miles in the air, 1or 2cm is plenty.

The other thing is don't think about a different type of swing for a par 3, whatever is your normal swing is what you need to try to put on it.

Just like most things in life Keep It Simple Stupid!! :D

surely this all depends on the length of the par 3 and weather conditions on the day? depending on wind direction, you can hit a 8 iron one day or a 3 wood the next off the same tee.

this is how i tee it up.

mid iron = low tee barely off the ground.

long iron = same as above.

hybrid = slightly higher than above.

3 wood = maybe a shade over 1cm above the ground

With an iron and a hybrid, I tee it up so the ball is just off the ground, say 1/8-1/4", because a downward strike is needed for those.

Absolutely correct, the correct angle of attack for a iron is a slightly desending blow, the shorter the iron the steeper the attack.
So a tee height of ¼-½ of an inch is about right for all iron shots.
If you tee it much higher than this you will loose compression on the ball and so hit weaker shots.

Disagree...

There's just more chance of hitting it higher up the clubface and hitting a weaker shot, nothing to do with compression.

Is the "compression" not squeezing the ball off the turf?

I wouldn't know, I don't get any!!!

Can't you compress the golf ball without hitting down on it??
:D :D :D

Of course you can. Golf balls "compress" every time they are hit. But (and forgive me for being confused) I though when folk talked about compression they were referring to the squeezing of the ball off the turf.

Like I said, I wouldn't know anything about that. :D

No. I think trackman has shown/proved that the ball only stays on the club for about 50 millionths of a second. Whilst you would assume that you are hitting the ball into the turf it has infact already left on it's merry way into the trees :)

Trapping (compressing) the ball with a downward strike is the most powerful way to hit the ball because the club is still accelerating, it's delofted (more distance) and it hits the most weight loaded part of the club, the sweetspot.... you don't want it high (skied) or low (thinned) on the face.

As you say, the ball will compress wherever you hit it, to one degree or another. I think 'trapping' is a better word as it refers to the nature of the shot (a downward strike) and not the ball.

In terms of the thread.. I've seen 7-irons hit off 'trick' tees that were a foot high.. they went miles! as long as you hit it with the correct impact then compression of the ball wouldn't be affected.

The only issue is the higher the tee the harder it is to be consistent though... sooner or later you'll hit one to the moon!

Maybe not heading off into the trees, but if you watch near the end of this clip you can see that the ball doesn't get hit into the ground.
