Swing Speed - Holy Cow!

Congrats to the OP for still being here. The way some people have insulted him I wouldn't blame him for thinking that this was like most other internet forums and not bothered logging in again.

I agree and even more so considering that most people who have thrown the insults can hardly shoot below 80 themselves!

Speed and length of drives IS the key to golf regardless of what anyone wants to say. if you don't have enough power to play the course then you're fecked.

At 5 ft. 5 in. and weighing 120 pounds, LPGA Tour Pro Lorena Ochoa's average drive is 271 yards. Probably longer than most of the people who have commented about taking 50yrs off their drives!

If you CAN'T swing hard then you HAVE to learn to be accurate... but if you CAN swing hard then swing your socks off!!

I don't doubt hitting the ball further helps. However, the OP hasn't helped himself with some of his argument. He said...

I don't have a handicap at the moment - still practicing. I normally play my club's 9-hole course (short par 3) and get around +2. Played one golf society competition and got +12 and longest drive (270, downhill). In practice I normally birdie/par/bogey most holes but have occasional nightmare hole. I would guestimate about +12 handicap.

Yet he also tells us he hits 80% of fairways hitting it 250yds which on a short par 3 course I would imagine is difficult :D

My old club had a short 9 hole course made up of short par 4s and par 3s and I regularly went round that in 1 or 2 over but that is a hole different world to playing on a proper course.

Personally I'm a little confused by the whole thing and I'm still not convinced it's not a wind up. The OP is 5 years older than me, he might be in great physical shape I don't know but there is a reason his swing speed is in the low 90s. Technique could increase that a bit but mostly it's physical. To increase to 120mph without simply swinging your arms faster is gonna take a lot of time in the gym and a good golf coach, not a swing speed reader and a few weeks on the range.

I hope I haven't insulted the OP, I said he wasn't off scratch cause he isn't good enough but that's the truth not an insult. I just think his focus is misguided for someone who has hardly played any real golf.

It sounds like you are suffering from Little Man Syndrome. Please don't let that spoil your enjoyment of the game.

haha! Ice cold.

If you do start to get good and start hitting the ball a long way I can only stress this will happen when you have a bad day on the course.

Just make sure you rub it into them when it goes right.

They see me rollin'
They be hatin'

People with a "little man" problem often aspire to drive a Porche, or drive a golf ball further than other more "normal" golfers. ;) ;)

Sadly you are as wrong and misguided in this as your notion that you really will hit 280+ regularly and get down to single figures. I'm happy with 230 yards and straight. 37 points today so one up to the little man. Shame you aren't a "big man" and come to a GM Forum meet and prove me and the other doubters on here we are wrong. I guess you are happy to be a big fish in th little world that is your driving range and that proper golf is a step too far. Maybe par 3 golf is all you can muster. Still there is a national par 3 championship and manybe you can try for glory there. Come on Tim my man, grow some balls and come meet the Forum gang

the guy said it was ego, so why so personal
yes he should be out on the course playing and doing range work when there is no time to be on the grass
most of on here wish we could hit it further, but we all want to hit it straighter
he should see a pro and be properly fitted, but there are people on here who dismiss that as well
if he is genuine, then good luck
and i would get speed checked at several places
but speed alone will not get you distance, there are lots of other factors as bob has said
i would suggest playing some rounds and give us feed back on that, and ststs
but lay off the personal attacks, unless its chester

shagster

I'll leave you with something on of the commentators said about Luke Donald last night, roughly quoted as...

"a couple of years ago Luke tried to change his swing in a bid to gain more yardage. All he really achieved is a damaged wrist and 9 months out of the game. He soon gave up on that idea, went back to what he knows and has come back better than ever"

Good luck.

I'll leave you with something on of the commentators said about Luke Donald last night, roughly quoted as...

And then he added: "I'm hitting it just about as far as everyone out there today."

As for Homer - why would I want to spend my time on a course with a person who advertises his own golf blog and who celebrates mediocrity (for someone who wants to hit scratch, wtf use is 37)? I think I would rather have a testicle removed.

If you're happy with 230 and straight then I have news for you. You are highly unlikely to succeed in your quest for scratch. At some time you need to learn to hit the ball a longer. Or just bury your head in the sand. :D

For clarification: my "Par 3" was a typo. I meant "short Par 4". It's a combination of 3s and 4s, some of the 4s 360+yards. But that's irrelevant now since this thread seems to have been dragged into the dirt.

Consider this:
"At the age of 18, Jack Nicklaus was invited to play a friendly match with Arnold Palmer and several other players at a local Ohio golf course.

The legend goes that while hitting practice shots, fans and players alike became mesmerized by Nicklaus’ incredible power.

In a gesture geared towards entertaining the large number of fans who had shown up, nearly all of them to watch Palmer, the gentleman who was running the event took Nicklaus and Palmer to the first tee to compete in a long-drive exhibition before the start of their match.

Palmer took his trademark weekend hacker-looking swing sending several lightning fast low line drives flying off the tee box, which eventually stopped rolling between 270-290 yards from the tee.

Nicklaus, a heavyset 18-year-old man-child with a picture perfect golf swing, attacked the ball with incredible force sending his drives exploding off the tee like a rocket.

Unlike Palmer's low line drives, Nicklaus’ ball would not reconnect with the ground until completely clearing a green which sat 360 yards from the tee."

FWIW I cannot understand the animosity which is created by someone who says he can hit the ball 250 with 80% but now want to hit 280? Is it because I've only been playing one year? Jeez - 250 is not that far.

FWIW - the reason I don't have a handicap yet is that I don't play much golf on the course. I consider playing 18 holes with one ball a complete waste of practice time. 4 1/2 hours walking a course hitting 36 long shots and 36 putts, compared to 500+ shots on the range in the same time.

When I do play on the course I use my club's short course which is normally empty in the evenings) and spend time practicing various approach shots, chips and putts, and all from differing lies - sometimes 50 shots a time. This is fast-track golf, and I love it! (but want more (distance)).

Wow!

I haven't been on here for a couple of days, time has been more consumed by the earthquake/ tsunami coverage coverage in Japan.

I haven't looked at the all extra posts, I'm surprised it's reached 12 pages, but looking at the last few posts, it seems nothing has changed. Although Tim admits to being a beginner and novice in the game, he clearly refuses to accept any voices of experience, I can't believe you're all still feeding him. You won't change anything, you'd have a better chance at stopping that tsunami, sometimes you just have to let go and let him get on with it.

You're not the first person who'd rather lose a testicle than have Homer's swing! :D

_zzzzzz__zz_

One day you'll discover that golf is played on the course not on the range. Being able to hit any distance on the range doesn't guarantee the same straight distance on the course. Play a full size course, in competition conditions and see how you get on.
You may be unpleasently surprised..

Oh and 37 points is very useful as it means you've beaten your handicap - something you have to do very regularly if you want to get to scratch.
