Evening chaps,
This maybe a slight follow on from my alignment post but after playing this morning as its winter golf im not chasing scores too much and just working on different things.....
One thing im very comfortable hitting are my 3 and 5 woods.....
My question relates to what im guessing is my swing plane.....I think iv narrowed down my shot shape with my irons to a pull-slice from the diagrams iv seen......

Anyway i hit my woods very straight with little deviation left or right and im just wondering why i cant get my irons to work the same way.....
I do know that a shallow angle of attack is needed with the woods and i obviously have that but is there a way that i could get this swing to work for my irons or would it be way too shallow?

If i was to have a shallow angle with the irons would this mean then that all the lofts and lies would have to be changed......

From 7 through to wedges the flights are manageable but i seem to play 6,5,an 4 irons with a pull-slice....

Woods are weighted to get the ball airborn whereas irons rely more on backspin imparted on the ball to get it up in the air, which requires a more downward impact.

Your swingplane 'should' adjust itself naturally as each club has a longer shaft so you are by default standing further away from each club as it gets longer.

So am i right in thinking that everybody's plane changes as the club length changes J?
Its kinda frustrating when i can nail a 3 or 5 wood but struggle to keep a ball straight with long irons :D

More practice i suppose ;)

That is correct, imagine a club 20ft long, I guarantee you'd swing it pretty flat! whereas you probably clip a wedge about 18inches away from your toes with a nice steep plane.

I guess im not alone in my quest to keep long Irons straight then ......
I have noticed that if i strengthen my grip on the long Irons i dont get that left to right shape too much but i guess this is just masking the main issue isnt it?

If you strengthen your grip does it tend to go straight left?

Yes J......Which is just as frustrating.....mind you it doesnt always happen but its always in the back of my mind that it can which is just as bad!

You are just swinging from out-to-in, the question is by how much?

Without changing your entire swing you could try moving the ball back a decent 4 inches and pressing your hands forward by 2 inches at address. Make sure you are lined up straight and see what happens.... hit plenty of shots to get used to it. You might find that they fly lower and further. You will definately feel like you are about a mile ahead of the ball at address but you probably won't be at impact! :)

Will be interesting to know how you get on.

Thanks J. I will give this a try tuesday at the range and keep you posted ;).......Im presuming that you just want me to try this with the Irons rather than woods and all......

Well it's just to see if we can get you to hit longer, straighter long irons (6,5,4,3) via the internet.

You could try it with your woods and you might hit a draw

The key is to be lined up properly (I can't stress that enough).
