There are other factors that influence a cricket ball as well as shine, that's just part of the mix. Atmospheric conditions are as important
8 yards deviation with a golf ball sounds a lot to me. A bit of scuffing has an effect but I doubt it would be 8 yards unless it was cut, which doesn't really happen anymore.

They also told us that the difference in distance between ALL of their balls (DT Solo to ProV1) was only 5 yards and that the only difference was the stopping power due the outer coating

Just set the scuff side to counter your slice .... Job done. But the problem with scuff resistant covers usually affects spin, but they are getting better. I have some brand new hex 56 golf balls, despite some discolouration (blue-ish white) they feel grippy and tacky .....

After all it was the discovery that well used and scuffed balls flew better than smooth ones because of the effect of the rough surface that first prompted the development of dimples on golf balls.
As for how long a ball should last that seeems to vary a lot by reading the ball review threads. Some players, clubs, courses seem to cause more scuffing than others.
I'll expect a quality ball to last me 2 rounds and maybe even 3. New Z-Star I'm testing is still in pretty good shape after 2 rounds.

It is pretty obvious to be honest, it is all about aerodynamics. You put the scuffed side at the side and it will act like a rudder on an aircraft. As soon as it is in the air and that airflow hits the scuff it will start to impart side spin and we all know that side spin will make the ball move offline.

It does make sense that scuffs will effect the ball flight as that's why the dimples are there in the first place.
By how much I don't know but I'm sure Titleist will have done their research and will either quote average or most extreme variations
