summer -v- winter scoring

Hi.. This summer marked my first full year playing golf regularly. I have seen a (slow but) steady improvement with my scores and my all-round game in general. I have not joined a club yet, although plan to next spring. I currently call the local municipal my "home course".I was under the impression that winter conditions were not conducive to low scores however over the last month I have consistently shot lower scores. I was averaging around the 100 mark but I've now shot. 3 consecutive rounds in the 80. It seems like too much of a jump to put it down to an improvement in my game!! Bar the high winds that we see in the winter months, are course conditions generally easier to play in (as long as you are suitably wrapped up??

Hi studger. Where do you play?

As for your post, I play great in the winter. I'm better off mats than grass (alignment?!) off the tee and the course is much shorter making my life far easier. Oh, and preferred lies help me too.

I guess everyone's game is different though. Off the full length course, I'd be struggling with 10-20% loss of distance with the big clubs.

I reckon you are just playing better though in your case.

Hi dave... Well I play at Pype Hayes most regularly. Its generally in decent condition but does get rather busy! There are 4 or 5 local members clubs that me and my playing partners play every now and again too. I do hope it is an improvement to my game, each time I go out I'm almost scared to play in case I go back to the higher end of my scoring! Not the attitude to have I know!I'm not too sure about the ruling with 'preferred lies' so I have been playing as normal. Maybe I'm missing a trick here?! A lot of people I speak to don't like to play much through the winter, but like you, I think I'm playing well over the winter so why complain! Can't beat a nice summers morning for a round though!!

You usually find that scoring in autumn and spring is better. Those sliced/hooked shots don't go as far off line coz the ground is softer. The greens are usually more receptive too.

Once you hit the depths of winter, with no run at all, a howling gale and more wet rounds you'll score worse.

pretty much agree with this.

around our course, i can go into greens with too much club in the winter and it will hold up instead of flying through, even had a couple of thinnish 5 irons hold the green this week which in the summer would definately have not. Also the ability to chip to the pin in the winter seems to make up and down saves alot easier

I wouldnt say winter golf is easier, but its without doubt a different style of playing. i think is also leans in favour of the longer hitters
