It isn't the fact that it's harder in winter, that's obvious. It's that the club didn't take into account the distance impact that winter brings. No problem playing qualifiers in winter. More of a problem that the course was set up as a slog. Set it up properly, all would be good. Unless of course you enjoy slogging around a wet course in winter with minimal fun involved.
Oh yeah, I feel for you. Our winter course is 500yds shorter & 3 shots less on CH than Yellows & 1,000yds & a further 3 shots less from the whites. It seems to suit all members as we've had some good turnouts for our winter qualifiers.Golf is meant to be fun

At what time of the year was your winter course rated?
We go to the Red tees in the winter, and all others are taken in, but of course, it is available all year round but not played from the all-weather tee mats in the Summer.
Surely sometime between May and December as all courses are rated in and for ‘summer conditions’.
That's why I was asking. When I was rating we never worked beyond September.
Sorry to confuse. Termed our 'Winter course' as it's played from the artificial tee mats that are within 10yds of the Red plates & as I mentioned elsewhere, is providing a fine challenge for all H/caps as Comp scores rarely get far into the 40's with many being won with just 37pts.
So most people are likely to have their handicaps increase in winter if scores are on average worse?
Yeah, I guess it would be reasonable to think so.
, though I guess others may well be different.I think there’s always a big difference in qualifying scores on parkland courses comparing November/ December vs Jan/Feb/March when temperatures are considerably lower and course conditions have deteriorated - that seems to be the case in this part of the world anyway.Yeah, I guess it would be reasonable to think so.
However, I've had a look at mine,
In the middle of summer on 1st July I was HI 15.1
My 20th score is 19th Aug when HI 13.8
Of my best eight, six are after we went to winter tees on 7th Oct. when HI 15.2
I'm now HI 14.5
With only 2 Summer scores to come off 15.4 & 16.3 I'll be expecting to remain fairly steady for the remainder of our courses Q period...... doubt we'll be able to retain Q conditions all winter.
So I'd say our course is doing very well for me as I've also been in the prizes 3 times recently
I can't see us playing Q golf in Jan, Feb & March. In fact going by recent years it may well be Late May, June before we get there. BUT... who knows.
