Struggling with Par 5's?

Keep it simple. Swing smoothly, keep it in play and use your shots. If you get a par (net birdie) happy days are here, but if you aim for six net five every time I bet you take less big scores and play them far more consistently

You could try reversing your thought process. Rather than looking at what to hit off the tee, start from the green backwards.
If you like hitting a 120PW into a green, that leaves between 350-400 yards to the tee (most common par 5 total distances). Now, what two clubs put you there? And that's assuming you want to hit 120 in. Even 150 isn't too bad for a third and that's only leaving you 370 for two shots.

I've now sussed that all my lost/dropped shots are par5 related!

When joining my new club recently 2 par5's on the 6th and 16th were immediately my Nemesis holes, thankfully I parred them this week so that mental frustration has hopefully now gone, but reviewing my card from yesterday at the Centurion Club again all my drop shots are only on the par 5's!

I scored 13 points on the 5 x par3's, 14 points on the 6 x par4's but then only 8 points on the 7 x par5's of which 2 of those were non-scoring

Thinking back, my poorest drives were only on the par5's, if I got a decent drive away my 2nd shots became the poorest on the par5's, so by the time I'd hacked my way to the green, its too late to attempt a par as I'm scrambling for 1 pointers :(

Is this a mental thing thinking its a long hole and I'm trying to hit it harder off the tee (which doesn't work) putting myself in trouble, but, if I get a decent drive away am I adopting that for my 2nd shot which becomes a fat or off-line!

My handicap could tumble down if I can address this, thankfully Burnham & Berrow today has only 3 x par5's :D

Is that not 41 pts? Am I missing something?

Remember you don't HAVE to take driver off the tee just because it's a par 5.

I twigged this last year and now, in medals, usually hit 4 wood, 2 or 4 iron off the on 3 out of the 4 par 5s at my place as it makes it easier to score.

Yeah I usually try and take a club which will put me in place to hit a 6 iron inside 150 yards.

520-150 (7i)= 370

370-160 (6i)= 210

Usually a 2h or a 3 wood is enough depending on wind to get me out 210. Any other distance is a bonus beyond that and just means shorter irons for the next 2 shots.

It should be,

Keep it on the fairway
Dunt an iron
Have a go at the green
Chip on
2 putts

Any more than that is a disaster.

Started playing par 5's really well by laying up at around 80-120 yards out.

I need to at our place as we have 3 in a row in front 9. My problem is as soon as I think I'm even remotely in range I have to have a go at it i can't help myself.

This latter way of playing them generally produces the worse score.

If you have a gameplan then you are compelled to, you will HAVE to lay up or you will be playing outside what you are prepared for.

Don't give into temptation, take satisfaction from executing what you planned.

I am learning to do this and I imagine in competitions I will 9 times out of 10. It's the risk/reward though I enjoy having the chance of eagle!

Most par 5's can be reached with 3 x irons. Robin, as an experiment try playing them with irons off the tee and laying up and see how you get on. Leave driver, woods and hybrids in the bag for a few rounds, I'd bet the results would be more than acceptable.
