We are going to Portugal in a few weeks and one of my mates was tweaking our regular society "spready" which calcs S'ford points etc.

Looking at the scorecards for 2 of the courses he noticed that the SI's are a bit random (mix of odd and even on each 9)

Ever seen that before, does it make a difference if playing 18?

Ta muchly

Swings and roundabouts.

Some hefty statistical analyses show it makes virtually no difference in total points.

A few clubs (TOC being an example) have it. Makes very little difference imo, simply reflecting difficulty of hole rather than 'distributing shots given/taken over each 9'. Better for Stableford imo!

Lot of clubs who have 27+ holes use odd / even on separate 9s so they can mix and match. Other than that as long as the normal recomendations are followed - no probs.

There are other factors than degree of difficulty when assigning stroke indices. For instance you wouldn't want the 18th hole to be SI 1 in matchplay, because the match might be over by then and the higher handicapper wouldn't be able to benefit from his shot.
