Hi all, first time on the forum.

I've been reading lots of the posts about stats tracking software especially about scoresaver.co.uk. Does anyone know where I can find out what a golfers target should be for each of the stats against their handicap ie if you play off 5 your GIR target should be x, if you play of 20 your GIR target should be y?

I know some of my stats and play off 12 but I don't know what stats are below handicap and what are above.

Cheers

I like the idea of these stats, aimed at your handicap rather than a Scratch players expectations.

I'm off 14 at the minute with my best round being a +7 to par (79 on a par 72...not a +7 handicap! christ if only), and when you look at the expected stats for a 12 handicap it looks dead easy doesn't it! i will bear certain stats in mind when I'm playing and see how doable they all are. I mean certainly fairways and GIR I would expect to be better off than these given here and Sand Saves and Birdie conversion too. Theres always something that lets me down though...on current form i think my penaltys would be higher, and maybe my putts too. Interesting stuff this. Anyone got the stats for a 10, 5 and O handicap? Just for comparisons sake? I have literally nothing to do here at work and I could use some mental stimulation.

Yep, welcome.

I'm might be corrected on this by Andy, however I would have thought that these targets are purely a mathmatically averaging out or logorythmic calculations based on what a players standard could be. You could take it to extremes and be a low h'capper with your driving FIR, if you are particularly good at that, but might be a putting diaster, but it averages out.

Regardless of how accurate it is is irrelevant, as long as it's measuring you by the same calculations each week.

Mind you if the software says my playing h'cap is 38 (disaster) and my GIR is that of a 16 h'capper it does give me some hope.

Give SS2 a try, it's a great piece of work.

"Out of interest how are the stats calculated?"

If you mean the "Handicap Standards", the answer is "With great difficulty". We reasearched, calculated, tested and refined the figures for over 2 years prior to release.

Whatever values we used, there is no way that the handicap standards would fit everyone's game. Two 12 handicappers may have the same handicap but totally different stats.

What stats, what targets.............get out and play, have fun. I know when I'm hitting the ball well, I know when I'm putting c$ap, I know when I've played a good chip and my score card and HC tells me the rest.

Sorry guys, I dont subscribe to the stats stuff, but I take a mental note of the good and bad stuff.

Tomo, would agree with you to a point, but it's useful to know if a pattern emerges, and you can only do that with stats.

PS. It's also useful to prove to the wife that that £100 putter you just bought is improving your putting. BTW dear wife have you seen my driving stats, I need a new driver!!

Mind you she really doesn't give a .......All she sees is ££££.

Somehow I don’t think my good lady would entertain a graph of how bad my putting was to justify getting a new one.

In saying that, I got a new YES Valerie putter a few days ago. Guess my wife’s name? Now that was a good excuses and no stats needed.

"Val dear, I couldn’t leave the shop without it. Look it has your name on it".

"Just tell me how much"

For what its worth I think they are an absolute necessity and strokesaver is the way to go. By comparing with the SS2 stats for my handicap gives me a fair idea how I'm performing based on perceived ability.

However, one of the main advantages of SS2 and something I use diligently is the practice facility where you can record your practice sessions and how long you dedicated to each facet of your game. If you build this up honestly and then compare the length of time say on your driving with the fairways hit for that period will reveal whether you are practicing the right thing. It also highlights ares you may have thought were okay but are obviously not as strong as imagined.

Another key point within the system is the fact that you can give regular reports showing your performances to your pro. I have just swapped coaches and we are working on a series of swing changes and on focussing on key areas. By giving him these reports he can see how I am performing and change his lessons accordingly to focus on weaknesses or obvious dips.

These two example in my mind show the real reason why it is a necessity to keep stats and to do so as honestly as possible. I use mine to look back on how I am playing holes and change my strategy.

Hmmm.....

That's what I thought. (I hit it a long way, but need to keep it in play more. Am an ok putter, but am a plonker at the short game). But just bashed a load of scores into SS2 and surprise surprise. Am long hitter and not too bad at keeping it in play (or getting it back in). Short game so so, but am a terrible putter. All relatively speaking, of course. A cack putter? Surely not. Oh well........

stats, Stats, STATS..... :( :D

Don't get me started. :(

I've never comes across such unmitigated rubbish in the whole of my life....sorry SS2.....it's a good product, but the only way to read anything into stats is to understand your own game and do something about weak areas...

According to these so-called averages (no doubt an arithmetic "mean") I drive as good as someone off 3, hit the greens of an 8, putt like a 17, sand-save the same as a 36. This tells me nothing....

I know 1) how many fairways I hit, 2) how many greens I hit and 3) how many putts I took......the rest is immaterial to me.

A slightly OTT response for you! As I mentioned, my pro is keeping a record of my stats month on month as we are trying to work on a swing programme to take my game to the next level (10 and below). It is helping him to see whether I am struggling at with my drives or my irons are not hitting the greens, sand saves are iffy, putter gone cold etc.

That way when we meet for a lesson we can work on swing specifics aimed at a better swing but can also gear part of the lesson to addressing the current weak spots.

I know they are not to everyones liking but I do think they make fascinating reading especially if you spend some time and compare say your stats now (in my case after a lesson) to three months ago (when really struggling). It really highlights how far all aspects of my game have progressed and if nothing else acts as a motivational tool. Anyway I've paid my one off fee now so I might as well carry on using it!!

I thought I'd wade in with bad-mood post! I was mostly being controversial.

I know you use it (and lots of others on here).
It's brilliant for seeing all sorts of trends.....but I find the actual "average-for-h'cap" thing a bit silly.

What would make me re-install and buy the product would be if I could "reset" some of these daft figures and compare my stats to MY game. I don't want to hear what an average player achieves on a weekend (x 1,000,000s), I want to know what I did well for myself, or need to improve on next time out. I just find it a bit patronising....and it's one of those times when figures are actually misleading....we are all different.

That sounds good.....nothing worse than being told everything about your game (other than driving, say) is equivalent to a beginner!!!

I'm not a Scoresaver subscriber, I do however use a freebie bit of stat software. Not as detailed or informative as Scoresaver, more of a golfing log. I do find it useful and actually enjoy inputting my scores (turning into a golf nerd methinks!)
I lok at it as more of an online golfing diary come logbook where I can look back at how I have done.

How do you guys who use Scoresaver note all the details from your round, such as fairways hit, GIR etc? Do you take notes during your round?
