Old folk, like me, love it as we grew up with it...

And, if it ever migrates to Sky, the usual fools will go on and on and on how much better they do it than the beeb did...

Which it ought to be considering how much they take in subscriptions whilst still feeling it necessary to bombard viewers with skybet propaganda... I like a rant me 😉😁...
But at least you’ve got a Choice over subscribing to sky 😊
Plus you get to tailor the package to suit.
Personally I’d prefer the Beeb to show more sport rather than give us this farce every year.

Seriously what as Raheem Sterling done to warrant being 2nd fav?

Not sure you get any preferences as to what commercials you get bombarded with...

And, if BJ gets his way with the funding of over 75 licences think It will be test card service only for most of the day...

Should they get rid of all sporting recognition awards?

It’s the same every year when it comes to SPOTY - it’s just a look back over the sporting year and gives the public a chance to vote for who they think is the Sports person of the year - it’s harmless fun and shows that as a nation we do have some outstanding sports men and ladies

The people who matter believe it to be worthwhile and it’s certainly something the winner treasures

Right now Stokes is the outstanding candidate, Peaty has had a phenomenal year and there could be some candidates from the RWC and Athletics WC
But usually the winner (and most of top three) are those in the public limelight nearer the time. The public won't always remember what people did back in January or February even if it was a major achievement. I still think apart from the Helen Rollason and the one recognising people who have made a difference in the local community it is a waste of time. Things like the team awards aren't even voted for by the public

There is no way Stokes will win it. Wasn't there an England netball player or the right-back in the women's football team the BBC would prefer won it?

I've no problem with the concept of championing the best of the year, but if anyone performs remotely well and BBC happen to have showed it then they certainly push them over others.

As to your point about past winners treasuring it. I'm sorry, but if you asked sportsmen and women nationwide what their ambtions are I'd be amazed if SPOTY was even mentioned before they ran out 8f ideas....

Its a bit of harmless entertainment and a chance to look back at some great sporting moments in the year. If there's a bit on it that doesn't light my candle I go and make a coffee.

Why do so many people get so het up over it? Its light entertainment, and thats all it is.

really ?

Or is it not more the case that BBC have the pictures from the events they cover but certainly don’t see “bias” towards BBC sport.

As Hobbit said it’s just a bit of light entertainment- I don’t understand why people start foaming at the mouth towards the BBC when it comes to SPOTY - if it’s that bad people should just switch over

Who mentioned anything about “ambitions” to win it ? Just because someone doesn’t have it as one of their ambitions to win SPOTY doesn’t mean that if they do win they won’t treasure the award and see it as a big deal for them- it’s an award voted by the public - it’s not something to be sniffed and still seen by many as a big thing to win. The winners list is full of the UK greatest sportsmen and women

How many winners have not received the award in person?

Obviously the greatest names are onhe winners list, that's the point of it. But I still don't for a second think the winners cherish it anywhere near as much as any of their actual trophies they've won to get nominated.

Would love to see some tops sports stars trophy rooms and see if the SPOTY award sits alongside their other medals....

In regards to foaming at the mouth. I'm not. Like I say, it's good to see the year highlighted, but I'd argue your defence of it is equally as ott. If someone doesn't enjoy it, theyre allowed to watch and still criticise, you knock sky and the us tour yet still post plenty about it.

The thing is, in recent years they've reviewed some sports where the BBC have had no TV rights and merely talked over still photos. That's not a sports review and only reinforces outside of olympic and commonwealth years where they have the luxury of two weeks of coverage, how little investment and coverage there really is. I wouldn't be surprised if at some stage in the future Sky decide to usurp SPOTY and introduce their own awards

Reading the bbc accounts is a real eye opener.... well worth the effort. :-)

Would be just a load of unfathomable figures on a piece of paper to me...

But, having worked in film/broadcast, for the best part of fifty years, I am aware the good content arrives despite rather than because of the old duffers that pollute the upper echelons...

Hilarious... All fully endorsed by SkyBet no doubt... Wonderful!

Now, I wonder what they'll do for images of the sports they have on ignore?

The beebs coverage of sport declines every year. In the last year of its contract covering the Open, it didn’t bother and passed it to Sky. In 2020 it will no longer cover the Masters. The annual #SPOTY is a charade, celebrating sports that the beeb cannot be bothered covering.

Stole from a parody account on Twitter

Linekar calling Stokes the “winner of the main award” - hope he hasn’t given it away ?
