I've now got a satellite connection in the flat and looking for a cheaper option than converting to Sky or getting it via virgin to get some sport channels. the standard freesat has none.

So the question is can a freesat box receive other satellite channels that carry sport and don't need a decoder?

and if so, which are the better boxes to get?

Personally I don't subscribe to any of these companies when you can get it for free!!

I have a HAUPPAUGE - Wintv HVR-2200 TV card which i have installed to in my PC, plug and play so simple and then i stream all my sports thru Myp2p and films from buttermouth, stageview tv etc etc

www.hauppauge.co.uk
cheers :)

FreeSat and Sport?
I have a FreeSat box and can answer that.
Diddly squat, unless something is being shown on one of the "terrestrial" channels like Formula 1 on BBC, or Foootie on ITV.
No dedicated sports channel. Loads of effing repeats though.......... That's why I'm contemplating going back to Sky.
If you do want to stay with FreeSat, I may well have a box for sale. It's about the best there is. Humax FoxSat PVR with built in hard-drive so you can pause, rewind, record live TV just like a Sky+ box. And you get a couple of HD channels as well. It's like new.

What he said. I have freesat inbuilt on my new LCD TV. I use it for the HD channels, like at this very moment watching some rubbish football game....
There are 2 a.t.m. and BBC doesn't even work some of the time.
The channels WILL come, but not just now.

Actually, we haven't really answered your question.
whoops. :D :D
You are asking if there is anything other than regular freesat decoder/box for sport?
Dunno.

Sorry.

Like Smiffy I've got a Foxsat HDR recorder, and while it's pretty good, I don't rave about Freesat itself at all really.

These are the Freesat channels;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_channels_on_Freesat

On the Humax I can put it into Non-Freesat mode, after which I get about 800 channels with random channel numbers, which is pretty pointless and loads of channels when I select them say "Not Available", so I just leave it in Freesat mode.

I guess I worded this wrong. What I was after was getting a stellite receiver that would allow me to pick up channels other than the basic freesat. I'm thinking though that with a fixed dish you're basically stuffed.

Well, I knew a bloke that installed a massive dish and watched free satellite TV from all over the world, presumably with a super-decoder-box of some sort.

Trouble is, you're after sport channels and most are going to be scrambled surely? There are manual tuning options on many satellite boxes, and you can find some weird s*** but probably nothing of interest t.b.h.
