I was looking at the stats for yesterday,
For a course with such generous fairways, only two players broke the 300 yard average.
Colin Montgomerie was only hitting it 254
Jose Maria Olazabal was shorter again with 246, neither were even in the top 50 for for fiarways hit either.
Alvaro quiros is in the top 30 putters in stats yet is 112th in GIR, probably his chipping is saving him from an even worse score.
Out of all of the players Francesco Molinari is the only guy to hit 100% of the fairways from the tee and is middle of the pack in distance with 270 average.

I think the moral of the story is its better to be average in all areas than good in just one. :D

Do you know ... are those distances measured when ONLY a driver is used?

It seems almost impossible that Ollie and Monty are only hitting around 250.

Dave, I think they measure two holes each day mostl likely where the driver would be employed.

Ah! Another problem with statistics...... If they used 3 woods then they're obviously going to be shorter than the drivers. So what does taht stat tell you?

Hmm....that's kind of what I thought.

If some folk decided to measure the drives on my course, they'd find me very short off the tee, as I use a 5 wood on the S.I. 1 hole and play it as a par 5.
There's one hole where everyone takes a driver (449 par 4) no trouble anywhere but that's uphill so I take 230-240 every time. The first par 5 on the back 9 would be the best bet as it's flat and no bunkers....I managed 265 there yesterday.

I dont think the pros would use 3 or 5 woods on all of the holes and fear the driver like some of us amateurs. Id imagine they pick the par 5s or whatever holes would require driver and whatever just to get home in two.
