Some advice for a novice

Hi all and thanks for welcoming me into your Forums

I'm a pitch and putt golfer who has recently got more of a taste for the sport. I will be taking lessons over the next 12 weeks and I wanted to buy an inexpensive first set of clubs to get me through those first few months/year. My budget is flexible, but I would like to avoid spending more than say £100 and, also, I want to get something entry level enough that I can then upgrade when I get more into it.

What I'm looking for is an ideal full set with a full range of irons, a putter, driver/wood and wedges or hybrids.

I'm more than happy to look at eBay/Gumtree and I would actually prefer getting something a little better 2nd hand rather than grabbing really cheap stuff new. So my question to you is...

Would you suggest any particular brands? Any particular club set? etc..

Welcome, The Ping g5 and g10 range gets rave reviews, now over 5-8 years old i guess and not far off todays stuff! Plenty of people here still using them! Thats what i would look at anyway.

If you are taking lessons, don't hesitate to ask your pro about the equipment. He might know someone who wants to sell a used set and will also be able to help you pick something that suits your needs.

Driver, I'd have a look at the original Taylormade Burner, about the same era. Was a cracking driver at the time and there should be plenty about.

Putters, take a look at some of the odyssey white hot range. Again pretty much the same era.

Welcome along and best of luck with the club(s) search, as has been said older premium brands are best, you might need to stretch your budget just a little to get fully knitted out but it will probably hold its value quite well

Thanks very much for all the advice guys. I have started looking at some Ping Irons and they seem affordable. I also like the look of the Tailor Burner as a driver and the White Hot putter from Odyssey.

Would you look straight on eBay or are there any particular websites which specialise in 2nd hand clubs? I've had a look around and there's one which seems like a good one (namely UsedPing.co.uk) but perhaps I could get a better price off eBay?

golfbidder are good quality and reliable, but you pay a premium.

I have found that ebay for golf clubs is better value. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to tell when stuff is genuine. It will be at least 30% less than a second hand shop/online store. Ping kit like g5 and g10 would be perfect. It might be worth visiting the Ping website to use their fitting graphs to make sure that you get the appropriate length/lie angle - it's colour coded, so easy to match up with ebay listings. You just have to know your height and wrist to floor measurements.

OP - FYI tricky to change length but lie angle is cheap as chips to be adjusted.

Welcome along. Personally (and it's only my opinion) I'd stay away from e-bay or gumtree as there are loads and loads of fakes around. Speak to a pro at a range or local course and they can give you some decent advice. I don't think it's as easy as it sounds. Reason being you may well be busting a gut to buy clubs before you are ready for them and may well end up buying the wrong ones to early. ping G5 and 10 are excellent rated clubs but no one has really explained why (for you) . Someone will explain why and better than I could.
If you are having lessons over a period of time, where and what with would be my first question.
If it is a club, get them to ask around for second hand clubs or new. There are some good bargains out there. It's just finding them. If your having lessons for X weeks they may know of what's knocking about.

I still have 2 TM burner 2007 drivers. 9.5 and 10.5 deg and I played with them for years and loved them both. I still use the 3W and 5W from the same era.

I started playing golf with a set of Titleist cavity backs, you cant go too far wrong with these or any cavity back models from a leading manufacturer for that matter ie Ping, Mizuno . Its guess work but I think you ought to look at a regular flex shaft like Dynamic Gold R300.

Hi all - First of all amazing to see so many replies, can't tell you how much I appreciate it. It's a bloody mess with so many different models and variants when you look to introduce yourself to the sport, but I've now spent a few weeks with my pro and working on my swing, grip and mid-iron game and have a much better idea of things.

I went for a club fitting the other day (free, incredible!) at my local shop and they recommended the following:

- GI clubs (anything like Ping G5 and above) - They said SGI clubs aren't worth it as they may hinder my improving my game as they may be too forgiving. In my opinion that sort of defeats the purpose, but I will bow to knowledge greater than mine until I have formed my own opinion
- Standard length shaft
- Standard flex
- 1 Degree flat (Equivalent to Ping red dot)
- "TRX" shaft, or something along those lines? Apparently its a shaft which flexes towards the bottom, but I may have heard wrong. If anyone could shed some light, that'd eb great.

So basically now that's what I'm looking at.

If anyone on the Forums has a set of GI Irons 5-PW (7 clubs total) from a decent manufacturer from around the 2009 era, I'd love to talk to you What I'm looking at here is either a set of G10s or whatever else was getting great reviews at the time!

Right! Just wanted to respond to say thanks again to everyone.

I ended up getting a cracking deal on a full set of G5 Irons (3-PW) although they will need their lie/dot adjusted.

I am still on the market for a Driver and Putter (and perhaps some hybrids if I can't hit my 3 iron properly!) but we'll see how I get on with my irons game first.
