Slow play - how to approach it

Play him at his own game.....take EVEN longer than him over your shots?

I just think let him get on with it...

You could light a camp fire and start cooking some bacon the smell is sure to put him off.

If he takes long enough you should have time to source the wood, light the fire end let it burn to embers then cook the bacon you used the time you had spare on the front 9 to cure.

Hahaha I'll take Ed Stafford as my caddie as well!!

That way you're not playing your own game though

Very true but you can't play your own game when the opponent is doing that so the best way to equalise the situation is to prevent him playing his own game as well. Hardly ideal but at least it gives you a chance to level the playing field.

That is of course a spot on answer, but like liverpoolphil, killing or at least unleashing the croc is surely more fun!!

I can just imagine the look on his oppos face when Davey turns up, a 12ft Crocodile strapped to his trolley with a sign round it's neck reading "Speed up or I'll eat ya"

are you saying this guy paced it out to the green, then guessed how many on the flag was. if he paced out that much he may as well go the whole hog to the flag.

if someone was at this carry on, id be tempted to leave them at it. either use a DMD, or your brain but get on with it.

It felt slow for a 2 ball that barely had a ball to find. I'm not the quickest player myself (although I'm proud to boost a 2h 50min round in a 4 ball) but the point is that we would be getting to the balls at the same time, but I'd have to wait for what would seem like an ages for him to count out the paces to the green.

I can fully understand that it can be frustrating waiting for other players to go through their routine and you feel like they are holding you up. I played with someone recently who would for every shot, line themselves up with their club held up to the chest (very odd), take a step back, take 2 slow practice swings, step forward and finally hit the ball. Probably took 1 to 2 mins for each shot. Did it slow us down? Sure did. Did I let it bother me, nope. I just used that time to think about my shot or take in the scenery, have a drink etc.

I just don't understand this need for people to get around as quickly as possible. As long as you are keeping up with the group in front and/or not holding anyone up behind, so what that each hole takes 2 mins more. Let's face it, the difference between 2hrs 50 and 3.5 hours is just over 2 minutes a hole more.

Just try to enjoy the fact you're out playing golf

Do a "Ray Mears" and start building an overnight shelter in the trees just off the fairway while giving a full commentary about what you are doing to an imaginary TV camera. It'll server to keep you entertained and freak him out as he'll think you are crazy!!

Maybe it would be an idea to pack a bucket and spade, then if you have someone like this you could strip to your pants and start building sand castles in the bunker with Derick you immangery friend.

This is sure to freak him out, especally if it's 5 degrees and blowing 40

Bob Rotella, in his "Golf is not a Game of Perfect", suggests that the worst thing you can do is pull a club and start practice-swinging yourself, or even holding the club you will be using, as this is subconcious trigger for preparing to hit the ball. As Greg says, take in the sights, take a drink, take a breather. just don't let it get to you.

It took me a long time to handle slow play, but now I'm pretty good with it.

Yup - I'll have a drink, dig a sweetie out of my bag (Haribo Sports rule!); or (my favourite) saunter off and start having a cursory look for lost golf balls. I'll also sometimes take a random iron out of my bag and clean the grooves. If I get REALLY pee'd off and my ball is a good bit ahead of his I'll stride purposefully and quickly to a point level with my ball. Then do some of the aforementioned.

btw - what's an 'online' round of golf.

I would concede the hole every time he did that. 3 1/2 hours for a two ball matchplay is not my idea of fun. Have better things to do with my time than watch those sort of antics.

Basically once the guy was within 75-80 yards of the green he was horribly slow and would pace out absolutley every distance he had to play from. I'd never seen anything like it before.

I have seen plenty of FCs whip out their DMD for these sort of yardages ;)

Yes - it's a bleedin' pain in the backside.

This was good entertainment, thanks

I can totally understand how this would be painful by the way, but if you cant deal with the habits (bad or good) of other players, they will always have the ability to get the better of you.

I would humbly suggest you stop trying to change the things you cant...i.e. the habits of other people and control what you can, i.e. yourself and your attitude

Best of luck

I like when in a four ball three of you do all sorts of little bits and pieces to try and suggest el slomo speeds up - and watch el slomo not notice everything going on - which is what usually happens :)
