Same really. If I wanted to hit some balls but was on my own I'd just go to the driving range. Golf on the course is about enjoying it with some friends and/or like-minded individuals for me.
The problem with range practice is that the shot is always from the same lie be it a mat or flat/tight mown turf and although it may possibly replicate a tee or fairway shot it doesn't give a true reflection of what you can expect whilst out on the course...
For example I can consistently (all shots within a few yards of each other) pop my 18* hybrid 210yds time after time at the practice ground but when out on the course unless I'm hitting it off a 'tee top' I'll struggle to get anywhere near the distance or consistency of which I'm capable of on the practice ground...
