I don't really think singles should be playing in the middle of the day
Could you not have joined a group instead of playing through?

When do you think singles should be playing then?
Thats a lot of people whose rounds you are delaying by expecting them to keep letting you through. Do you really think it is right to slow others down to facilitate your faster play ?

First off in the morning or when the course is quiet in the evening
During the day when the course is busy join up with other people
. anymore and I start to fire warning drives.

Don't think people do it on purpose
They just don't realise how inconvenient it is for people behind
The slow golfers are usually newer golfers, who look for balls, or don't play ready golf. They usually are not aware of people waiting behind, or the fact it is polite to let others play through

Under the circumstances described in the OP, yes they should have let him through. On a crowded course, no way. I wouldn't expect to be let through if the group in front were keeping their place. At my club, singles have no standing so the whole thing is down to etiquette.
Plenty of seasoned golfers have the attitude of "Non shall pass"
Last club, there were many people who just wouldn't let people play through and they'd been playing 20+ years.
