hi everyone was playing today in the rain
with a couple of blokes and 1 of them add a skycaddie, and all i can say is they are brilliant best thing since sliced bread i was taking my second shot on a longish par4 i was level to the 150 yard marker so i took out my 7iron anyway before i took my shot the bloke looks at me and says its not 150yards you know i said it is so he showed me the skycaddie and it was 148 to the front 155 middle and 162 back and the pin was on the back so put my 7iron back in the bag took a 6iron and i landed pin high im looking to buy one of theys things asap anybody else got one sorry for the long post but they are very good :D

Have got the SGX, super bit of kit, especially on blind holes( over trees). I have not had any trouble with mine but a lot of people have had problems when they have had the dreaded 'software updates', check on the skaycaddie forums. They are also very useful with fairway bunkers and the like as you can get details of the fairway hazards as well as the green i.e bunker distance and carry distance of the bunker or other hazards. They also calculate your GIR total putts and a host of other stats if you are into that. All of which are uploaded to the club beta website when you sync your unit.
http://clubsg.skygolf.com/ for the forums and info

yeah got an SG5 (used off ebay from a person but plenty of traded in ones on ther) mainly as not being a member of anywhere & im playing different courses all the time when i play

i love being able to just look right at it and know pretty much the distance - so easy
and playing shots on blind holes when you dont know where the hole goes is tough can easily lose a ball

dont think id use one if i was a longterm member of a club

I've had mine for a good few years now and swear by it. Brilliant at featureless courses you've never played (Lydd) and when you go off piste regularly like me. I do get frustrated by the annual fee but it does what is sets out to pretty well

Might be worth checking - the 150 yard marker could be to the front of the green so it may only be a yard or 2 out.

.......as in all probability will be the skycaddie - and probably more. How accurate do people really think these are??

The point I'm making is that Dean hits his 7 iron 150 yards. If he's beside the 150 marker and assumes that yardage is to the middle rather than the front then he's not going to hit the ball in the right place.
Accuracy of the SC is irrelevent in that instance. And I reckon they're pretty good. They don't rely on aerial maps, some one plods round mapping each course.

The Skycaddie SG2.5 that I have has to locate 4 gps satellites - that will generally give an accuracy to about 2m.
The accuracy of the course mapping is down to whether it was professionally mapped or not. This is shown on the skycaddie website.
I have checked the indicated distances on our course and the skycaddie readings were within 2 yards every time.

the thing i like skycaddie for is when u go to new courses and also my course has no. 200y 100y markers i no when u get to know the course it will be easyer but its just nice to know what yardest you got left to the front middle and back of the green

That's a darn small green you're hitting into. 14yds front to back.

And yes, I agree they're very good. Wouldn't want to be without mine now I'm used to having it.

Yeah, I thought the 150's must be to the front too unless they are just hopelessly wrong. What I was getting at is that if the SC says 148 the assumption seemed to be that the 150 yard marker was wrong when in fact it is probably the GPS. Just though it maybe gave the impression that the GPS was always right when clearly they have limitations. They are very useful though. If I wasn't so tight I may even buy one myself...... till then I'll make do with my smartphone app when playing away (oh no, what have I done   )

It wasn't until SC users at our club started complaining to the greens committee that there were a couple of holes where there was a significant discrepancy between the yardage markers and SC distance, that distances were checked.

Needless to say, SC rules OK and the yardage markers were moved. :)

They are a great starting point for a shot, they fall down if you are not honest with yourself. Can you really launch that 9 iron 150 yards? Best to get the distance and club up to allow for slight mis strike not club for a perfect strike. When you first get one go to the range and hit 20 balls with pw, 9, 7,5,3 then measure the distance to the approx middle of the groupings - this is how far you hit that club - sometimes a reality check but get used to it. Take this info out on the course and your distance accuracy should improve.
