If you check back you will see plenty of advice on skycaddies.
I have the 2.5 and it's brilliant , the 5 is in colour but it's a £100 dearer and has the same features as the 2.5 which is all you need and more

I have the SG5. Nice big screen, colour, very useful features (same as 2.5).

Nice product, well made, you won't be disappointed.

If you have the cash, the 5 is a lovely m/c. If you don't, there is nothing wrong with a 2.5.

Hi I have the sonocaddie V300 the good thing about this is that there is no annual subscription with the above GPS plus it as extra features as it keeps your score on the score card, track your all your shots round the course, it also keep a record of all stats, the problem with the sykcaddie is that if you do NOT pay the subscription you can not use the sky caddie

One point you failed to mention is that the skycaddie is the only one where the courses are measured by a golf pro on the course not by a man at a desk with google earth. Major factor for me. Yes i have a 2.5 so am a little biased

Not a golf pro as such earl but they are professionaly measured by a GPS enabler with GPS pack on his back who walks the course taking all needed measurement down.

Mmm? It was my understanding that you pay a subscription at the start and at the end of yr 1 should you not renew you are left with the courses on your Skycaddie - sure you can't refresh the course list but I was told you could still use the courses you have downloaded.

I guess I'll find this out in a months time...

I have the 2.5 and it is fantastic, completely helped me to shoot better scores.

If you have the cash to splash for the colour the only benefit is a larger colour screen. I would be dissapointed if I had got the 5 because the 2.5 is just as good.

Having compared mine with Vigs Sonocaddie V300, if money was no object I would have bought his for all the extras it does, but at the £97 I paid for mine, I am very happy.

YEAH I LIKE THE STATS THING ON THE SONOCADDIE.

If it is done by a man at a desk using google earth then is it still very accurate.

Is the skycaddie man thing significantly more accurate or does it just give that extra peace of mind.

I would have thought the SC would be more accurate (but how accurate does it need to be?). If the device is accurate to ± 2 yards, but the measurement on google earth is only ± 5 yards, you could be 7 yards out on the ground. I would think the man on the ground mapping would be more accurate than measuring off google earth.

Most of these devices are fine, I just like the Skycaddie. It has all the courses I play, here and abroad, and is easy to use. I don't think £40 per year on subscription is that bad. I spend more than that on chewing gum.

the issue with using google earth as opposed to the SC mapping is the age of the maps. I would guess that SC has done all its UK mapping in the last 2 years, some of the ge maps are a lot older than that.

If sonocaddie, and others, are simply buying maps from the same source as ge (not just using ge) you still have the issue of when they were done.

We've had this before about accuracy. The 5x someone quoted was due to Guam Imagery which was always 15' East but GE compensated for that - not sure it uses it now. People have proven that you can calibrate maps with GE so it must be pretty accurate.
Second, when I map courses on GE, even if the imagery is old, all I have to do on the first visit to the course, is to stand at the front of the green for example and press 'Survey' to update the position but only if the layout of a hole has been changed.

Hi Guy
Sorry about the the link to sonocaddie, must have a fault with my new laptop?????.
With sonocaddie if a bunker or water hazard is added or taken away you can make your own corrections to the reference points right on the spot.
(no need to ring anybody)
Dont know about the course mapping, just sent a email to find out, anyway both of these GPS system will be put through there paces next week at Goswick link Golf Club

My self and Vig compared yardages regulally at the Belfry and there was never more than about 5 yards out pretty much always less than that.

What we did conclude was 1 company will stand on spot X to mark the middle and the other company will stand on mark Y. The both companys would have to be stood in EXACTLY the same spot when they mark up or they will likely never be the same.

I would guess SC would be more accurate, but beleive me sonocaddie is not too shabby either!

The thing with Sky caddie, is that the middle must be calculated as half way between the front and the back. The guy doing the measuring walks the whole way around the green, so that the whole perimeter is measured.

Thus as you approach the green from a nearby faiway, it gives you front middle and back from your angle of approach. As a result, I would trust Skycaddie over the others.
