Silloth or S&A?

Bit of background - myself and 3 others won a charity auction for a golf day at Formby Golf Club to be used at anytime over the next 12 months thanks to the wonderous o2. Unfortunately the prize voucher turned up for a round at Formby Hall to be used before the end of March. After much too'ing and fro'ing the muppets at o2 are adamant that Formby and Formby Hall are one and the same place. Even though there 2.4miles of road between them. And that they are two different clubs. Th'idiots.

So, we're being given a full refund as it wasn't as advertised and have decided to use it all towards another golf day out. Hillside was mentioned, but the open comps don't fall nicely for all four of us (we've said it's going to be all four of us going). Now we're down to 2 choices. Either a full golf day out at Silloth or a comp day at Southport & Ainsdale (never played here).

Coming from the Preston area so travel wise up to Silloth is about 2 hours each way, whereas Southport is 30 mins, but then again the Silloth is a full day ticket whereas S&A is just 18 holes.

Anyone played both? Is Silloth worth the extra travel time?

Silloth is superb. Its only so cheap because its in the middle of nowheresville. It is well worth the trip.

S & A is great track as well though.

I was a Silloth member for 5 years. I think it is a terrific course and the locals are pretty friendly.

The course is an older style course with some blind shots. The course also changes with the wind, so if you have time for 36 then you will get a chance to learn the layout and also may experience a change of wind direction.

I hear S&A is a great course too, so sounds like you can't lose whichever way you go.

Silloth is unreal one of my favourite courses

Although I played in extremely testing conditions, Silloth is right up their for me and somewhere I would constantly try to play as often as I could if it wasn't such a pain to get to.

I've played Silloth twice and S and A 3 times.

I'm not the greatest fans of "out and back" courses, with Silloth being 8 out of 9 out, same coming back, but the other way. I've only played Silloth in 15+ and 30+ mph winds, and doubt you will get many non-windy days. It is a great challenge though and some very nice holes.

S and A is a cracking course, but without much scenery on the horizon. There is a bit more protection from the wind at SandA, but the holes also meander a bit more. It is also an ex ryder cup course.

If you did play SandA, you could warm up by seeing if there are deals on at the Formby hall 9 holer par 3 course, which i belive is good, probably work out the same expense instead of the extra money on fuel to Silloth.

They are very hard to pick between though. I think there are other chances to get on Silloth cheap another time, with opens, twilight and winter fees being good. I dont think SandA have as good a deal on these though, so could be a consideration. Play Sanda for free and have a cheap day out at Silloth another time, rather than free at Silloth and still a high price for SandA another time.

You'll enjoy both though.

The journey to Siloth puts a lot of people off but it is worth it But if you are playing 36 and then driving home its a long day we stayed overnight and I really enjoyed it a true links with some blind holes as good as it gets . S and A is more of a manicured links if you can get one of them the playing surfaces are fantastic and the layout is really good but if I had to pick one for my last round of golf I would go for Siloth it really is a top day out.

I have not played S&A so can't comment on that but I am a member at Silloth and I can say it is a quality course and well worth a couple of hours drive for 36 holes. Depending on the wind direction its usually make your score downwind and hang on into the wind. Prevailing wind usually helps you on the back nine. If you play 36 then the chances are it will be calmer in the morning and a liitle breezier pm, it is very, very rarely is it flat calm. Straight hitting as opposed to long hitting is essential as heather awaits on most holes to catch the errant shot. Plenty of gorse but you are well offline if you find that.

Yes they were extremely testing, but the course is superb and the club house is very friendly, I will defo be heading up there in the summer for hopefully a round in less testing conditions.

Only played S & A, but I loved. Seems to slip under the radar compared to Hillside. Drive4Show played it a couple of days ago, and he seems to rate it highly as well. Nice choice to have.

I'd defo vote for Siloth, but then I would as I won the sweep there with the Northeast Group in October withsome very very interesting conditions - facilities are good to

I haven't played S&A but Ive played Silloth a few times.

Its a fantastic course and if your lucky enough to play it when the weather isn't too rough its a real pleasure.On top of the quality of the place I'd say its one of the most enjoyable courses Ive played, and as others have said its a friendly & welcoming club/clubhouse.

The only downside is the location, Your looking at an hour on A roads once you've left the M6 just after Penrith and its a pretty dull drive,so prepare for a long day especially if your doing 36 holes. :thup:

Silloth is fine but I wouldn't be falling over myself to play it.

2nd best Links course in Northern England though.

I've played both and loved both of them.

Is Silloth worth the drive? If you haven't played either course then I would say no as S&A is superb and much closer. If you have played S&A already then I would say yes, drive up to Silloth. Whichever you go for, you won't be disappointed.
