should Tiger still be world no 1?

So Tiger has decided to take an extended break from competitive golf.
He isnt injured or unwell therefore should he still retain the world no 1 ranking.
I think if he isnt committed to playing on Jan 1st and (I dont blame him for not playing) then his world points should be removed until he resumes and then reinstated at a highly reduced level.

 :p

Like when he was off with his knee, he will lose points if he misses a lot of tournaments. The total points are divided by 40, and if you have played fewer tournaments within the period (2 years, I think), the total still gets divided by 40.

But during the knee break, he didn't lose number 1 position, and he is currently miles ahead, so unless he takes off a year, which is unlikely, he will almost certainly still be number 1 at the end.

Sorry, but a crazy post imo. You can't just deduct his world points because of what has happened, or because he might not play for 6 or 12 months. If they did that for everyone where would we be (e.g John Daly and his many transgressions, Nick Faldo for his divorces, Greg Norman for his divorce, etc). You have to just let him slip back towards the others through not playing. His current lead is large, but not insurmountable.

He'll be No 1 until his points average is fewer than the guy who overtakes him. You can't just delete 2 years worth of ranking points because he couldn't keep it in his pants.
Ridiculous suggestion I'm afraid.

I dont think its a crazy post im just asking people their opinions.
I look at it this way
who would have the number 1 plate in formula 1 if Button didnt drive next year?
I just think that if he doesnt play then he shouldnt be world number one

No 1 ranking or not, he's still the best. His wife should give him hell, but all the self righteous media bulls##t should butt out so we can get him back doing what the game needs, playing.

Sorry but I disagree. He is no 1 because of his perfomances on a golf course in the same way as Button is no 1 because he won the most races. If Button didn't race next year and whether the field raced from 2-20 on their cars it won't delete Button from the record books

As he had voluntarily withdrawn then I don't see how he can be included in the world rankings.

They should suspend his ranking and then when or if he returns then he should get his ranking points back.

If he ain't playing he ain't No.1 :p

His points score will fall, as it did during his knee break, because of the divisor rule. If Phil Mick won a pile of events during that time, he could take over. But he won't.

I try not to read the tiger stuff now but this has got to be the biggest load of drivel, apart from my own stuff, that I’ve ever read.

To hell with it, why don’t we just strip him of all his majors as well.

What is harsh about it?

The statement that This has to be the most ridiculous and ill thought thread in the history of this forum is a bit harsh.

I'm sure if you review past threads you'll find other which you might find equally ridiculous but others think are worth discussing after all it is a forum.

that's your opinion at this is mine....the OP is basically saying that as Tiger may not play for a while he should be taken away from his no.1 position,in any given season he sometimes goes a month without playing so therefore he should not feature in the rankings really then...infact just do away with the whole ranking procedure while your at it!!

Els injury,Donalds too....get them shifted out as well.

As pointed out the rankings have a way of working out so ill thought it is.

Utter tosh and a ridiculous thread.

The statement made by Tiger was that he is taking indefinite leave (indefinite - not definite; without fixed or specified limit; unlimited) he hasn't an injury nor is he taking a month off.

He will be out of golf for however long he feels he needs to and there is a possibility he might not return, so why should he be included in the rankings when he might never play competitive golf again.

Won't it make the system look foolish if the worlds No.1 golfer hasn't played for months or even a year?

Indefinite so it could be 2 weeks could be 2 months could be 2 years,he is free to return when he wishes so the answer to your question is no.

Didn't hear anyone requesting this when Els didn't know when he would be back.

Sorry Chrimbo but this really is rubbish. He has earned the right to be called number one and until someone puts in consistant enough performances to earn more ranking points than him then he deserves to be still called the World No1. As others have said, the longer he is out the smaller his margin will become and so others will have the chance to surpass him. As it happens I think he'll be back for the Masters anyway. I can see him playing in maybe the WGC events, the majors (maybe not the Open) and just enough USPGA events to keep his card
