I belong to a vibrant gold society with about 35 members and we had a day at Kirtlington , near Bicester yesterday and a lovely day it was too.

we have our own rules regarding handicaps in that there is no limit, therefore some of our older members can keep playing and be competitive long after they have passed the 28 Hcp ceiling in the real world. this does however lead to some chunky handicaps.

I was drawn against my Father In Law in the Singles competition, he is 73, and has a handicap of 49 (yes Forty flipping Nine), so I was giving him 30 shots,
I was playing very well with 20 points after the front 9 to his 14. and then suddenly something clicked .

He had had a couple of 8 for 1 points on a couple of Par 5's,on the front 9 , suddenly he got a par, then he parred a par 3 (with 3 shots), then bogied a par 4, but because he got 3 shots scored 4 bleeding points etc etc

He did have a blob, but still went round with 24 points from the back 9 to my 15, so it ended 38-35 in his favour. all credit to him, it was the best I have seen him play and he got only his second ever cut to 48 (lol)

Waiting to see which unlucky blighter he will get in the next round

First time I have lost to someone with a massively higher handicap and I can now see why Imurg gets miffed when I slam him :)

Had a similar thing in the first round of our winter singles , playing against a 20 capper that I still wonder how he got, he should be of 22/24.

On a normal day you never know where he might mis sand if he breaks 30 points he's done well, he shot 12 over gross and stuffed me either7/6 or 6/5...., yeah I'm still hurting from it.

While I appreciate the sentiment of flexing the handicap system - giving someone 49 shots is insane. I feel bad enough on the few holes I get 2 shots but getting three shots for 13 holes!!!!!!

Though I suppose it has given you an appreciation of Imurg world...then again perhaps not ;)

To be fair, he rarely breaks 30 points and I have no doubt it is an accurate handicap for his ability, he doesn't slow play down either.

Just how it goes :)

In my early days o went to 19 handicap for one round after a poor day at Castlerock links.

The following day at my home club Friday open, I scored 47 points for a 9 over round.

It beat the best player at the club who shot -7 gross.

Embarrassing lol

Don't have a pic of the card but I scored 67 gross, off 6 for net 61.

Won nothing.

C'est la vie!

:D
I was chatting to a plus 2 handicapper last year who shot a 7 under gross round and came 6th in a monthly medal, he was well peeved off! They didn't have a gross prize at his club in Scunthorpe.

On the plus side Phil, it sounds as though you played reasonably well yourself and that's all you can control. I like the idea of no limit for society golf although I can see how it could be a nightmare to play against someone getting so many shots and seemingly making three points a hole regardless
