Should I have laughed ?

Played in a board competition at the weekend, and saw one of the funniest (to me) things from one of my playing partners. His tee shot at the short 12 landed on the top of the bunker, about three feet from the green and less than 20 feet from the pin. Both my other partner and myself managed to plug our balls in the same bunker.

The partner whose ball was outside the bunker, having seen our lies was quite cocky that he had escaped the same fate. After the two of us managed to hack out, he then got out his putter, and proceeded to have an air shot with it. the putter hit the ground six inches behind the ball, and then jumped over the ball.

Whilst this would have been amusing in its own right, what followed was even better. Having missed the ball, all in one motion he pulled the putter back towards himself and hit the ball on the return knocking it back into the bunker we had just escaped from.

He tried to convince us it was not an airshot, but I am not sure you can hit a ball with the club on its third different swing path. Still not sure what the ruling should be, but as he shot 115, net 90 an extra shot here or there didn't exactly matter.

Am I a bad man for collapsing with laughter ?

Laugh? You bet. I would have howled with laughter.
Last Sunday one of our group who hits the ball miles took an enormous swing with his driver, topped the ball which travelled a record breaking 2 inches. the laughter on the tee was unkind but justified. We were amazed that a club doing 100mph+could do that.

it's comedy gold Rich, you did well to finish the round:D

no one likes being laughed at on a golf course but sometimes you have to stand back and admit something is funny.

Thanks for sharing.
Can't the mods just ban this IP address, seems to happen most days now

I would say put it back under penalty, as it was a ball accidentally moved by player or players equipment. I could be wrong though.

Must admit I was struggling to even think about a ruling but with hindsight I think he should have replaced the ball. He seemed to think it was one swing, but surely you can't hit the ball on the recoil ?;)

It was the funniest thing I have ever seen on the golf course, and I have a feeling that whenever I play the hole again I will have a smurk on my face.;)

I remember that hole well Rich - nice little birdie that sealed the match!!:D

I also had a smirk on my face last time we played that hole:whoo:
