Shops open

Haven't been shopping on the high street or retail parks for years. I'm not going to start now.

I've been saying a little prayer for my old Primark underwear during lockdown and the elastic is still holding up well. Fingers crossed it can last for a couple more weeks until the initial excitement dies down.

Just had a look out of my office window, reasonable number of people in Melton High Street, not crowded and social distancing being applied. Tomorrow will be more of a test as it is market day.

Hmm. I'd say that if you can keep the initial excitement going, then you should have no issue about the pants staying up ... :)

I happened past the local Sports Direct this morning. A queue right around the block - and just as long when I came past on the way back.
I'm just intrigued as to what's in there that everyone is so desperate to buy?

I think for a lot of people it’s just something to do and even a long queue is better than sitting at home twiddling thumbs.

I certainly have no plans to go shopping, nothing needs buying and I am busy from about half 6-7am through to a lot 9PM. No need to get out into town.

Sports direct are offering 50% off everything for NHS staff one day only to try and recoup some lost brand loyalty at the start of the outbreak. May explain the queue?

I can see this as being a bit of an opportunity for the high street. I suspect quite a few people (me included) are going to be wary about using big shopping centers and retail parks for a while. If the high street stores can get the next few weeks right, they have a good chance of winning back customers from the out of town locations. This has been the case for a number of people i know with supermarkets. shopping has now changed for the foreseeable to using local butchers, bakers, veg suppliers, farm shops etc who, in turn have made their opening hours more friendly to people who work. aside from a a small shop every couple of weeks, I cannot see the need to go back to being reliant on supermarkets as I am getting better quality, better service and supporting my community.

I wouldn’t expect shopping centres to suffer, there is more room to walk around in them than on the pavement in the high street, should be easier to maintain social distancing.

Depends where you are, my life is spent in market towns and most have large, wide, open, pedestrianised shopping areas in the center of town. Shopping centers concern me as I am not sure on the regulations. The shops inside can monitor numbers, have queues, social distancing etc but do they have to limit the number of people who are in the actual shopping center. Meadowhall on a Saturday with normal numbers, there us no way you could social distance on the walkways.

Our shopping centre like many has been in decline for a while now and on the odd occasion I have been in has felt like a ghost town. Hadn’t considered high streets with pedestrian areas.

The towns around me are perfect for the current environment, wide, no traffic, plenty of space to queue and all outside reducing risk. That said, they have still been in decline but now is a chance to really build their customer base and get the footfall back. If they could get the coffee shops and cafes serving outside as well whilst the weather is nice, you could really bring back the shopping experience.

Also, where do people queue so they don’t block other shops? Could see that being a problem in those centres that have multiple levels where there are gaps down to the lower levels
