Shocking range session, or was it the wind.

I have been DIEING to hit some balls for days. Before the wind came I had been working every day on my swing and it has been going really well. Today I made some time to hit the range and I either have a WILD slice or it really was just a waste of time out there. I got 3 balls out of a basket to move how I wanted them to, the rest just pushed hard and far right. I was actually a little shocked how bad it was.

Is there anything useful one can do in this wind? Stay in and not lose the confidence you had in your swing before the gales I guess! :o

Where the balls going way right because of the wind, or because of a wild slice? If it was down to the wind then I wouldnt worry about it, it was was down to the swing then.... I still wouldnt worry about it cos next time you go to the range the slice will probably have gone and be replaced by a hook :D

If it was as windy there as it was here, then you can't really tell if it's your swing at fault, also the wind will affect your balance and stability which also affects the shots. Best to try when it's a bit calmer.

Yep, they say its all over tomorrow and back to a 2 mph wind.... Bring that on please!!

You bunch of Southern Jessies, i bet its only a bit of a breeze. :)

If you only played when there was no wind up here, you would never get a game. :p

Thats one of the reasons we live down south,i for one hate playing in strong wind, saying that this weekend had my best round ever in the wind, shame it was a team event, five birdies

I tend to think that even with range balls you know when you've hit a bad shot and so if they are going right especially straight right its doubtful the wind will have had muc affect. OK it might have sent the ball further right in the air but you'd already got it going that way. It does sound like a slicing issue. Put it down to a bad session and see what happens next time out

Get yourself down to Saunton, and play in the wind there. Links courses are great in the wind, as you can hit the ball low and it will run on the hard tight fairways. Inland courses are not so easy as the fairways are softer, and the low punch shot tends to bury itself. Do seem to remember you have a high ball flight PJ :D

Alex I had the worst range session Sunday morning before a medal yet still shot a personal best. It was that bad i left half a bucket of balls for fear of ingraining the fault. Yet other days I've had the best range session ever and shot 10 over h/c the following day.

On days when the range goes bad I drop all long clubs and just play short wedges to targets up to 50 yards until I've relaxed again and my head is clear

Hehe thanks guys, It was the wind though, the ball was being pulled like nothing I have ever seen. The trouble is I could not tell what was good and not cos what I am working on needs me to see the ball flight. Really it was just another cry about the wind post.

I hit a few 8 irons to warm up and it was just laughable. No dobut though it was not a great day to learn, I still wanted to hit the ball.

You could always practice shots that you'd play in the wind like keeping the ball low of taking a couple of clubs more and hitting easy to keep the spin off.

Having a high ball flight is probably why i dont like the wind, also it messes my hair up,lol :)

Agree on point one + I have high launch shafts and on point 2.... I have a skin head :o

Ours was right into the wind at the weekend. I spent all range session punching 7 irons and hitting a 3 iron off the tee. Worked a charm, anything full just ballooned right up there so if I was out on the course I would have clubbed up a lot anyway. It did turn my usual strong draw into a bit of a hook at times but I could tell sometimes it was the balooning in the wind and other times it was a bad swing.

I actually played a 3/4 punch shot with a 6 iron into the 137 yard par 3 7th at my place yesterday. Hadn't practiced the shot at all and couldn't remember the last time I tried to hit it. The result was a ball that only went 15 feet in the ait hit the front edge and ended up 10 feet away. Practice is becoming over-rated !

I went to the range yesterday and was hitting the ball so well i was really looking forward to playing today, that was until i woke up this morning to what only be described as a hurricane!

The plus side was that the course was pretty much dead but i've never struggled so much around my local course. It really was a fight even just to stand up and walk without being blown off your feet.

But on the plus side i achived something i've always wanted to do at my course. Our 15th is a dogleft par4 and i've always wanted to take it on and cut the corner off but i've always come up a litte short as it's about 230 yards to carry the corner and the bunker/trees. But with a 25mph helping wind i decided to give it a crack, ended up clearing it completley but cut it off a litte too much and got stuck behinde a tree the otherside but it was fun to really attack it and take the "tiger line"

Also creamed a drive straight into a gale force headwind that easily went 350 yards.........straight up in the air!! and only carried about 150yards!

I giggled at the practice comment. On the punch, all I know is that it is a shorter follow through. I e if I were chucking my club down range I would let it go a little earlier to keep it low, you putting the ball on you back foot too? And hands forward?

Had no real concept of what I was doing even though it's bread and butter for the Scots and Irish links players on here. Put it just back of centre, weight slightly forward and took a 3/4 back swing and made sure I held off on the follow through so the hands never got above shoulder height back and through. Bound to be beginners luck but I'll try it again

I decided to skip going to the range yesterday due to the wind. I did a bit of putting practice instead as this area of my game is very poor at the moment...
