I know that we have some very technical and experienced players on here that know about these things, so here we go.

In my quest to get the next driver right, you'll already be aware of my 910 D2 9.5 Danima (sp) red test from the other night on a D3 setting. No gizmos, no launch monitors, just a range and the mk 1 eyeball.

Well today I went to the club range to try more shafts. Namely the Dianama Blue regular, an Adila Rip 60 3.2 regular and a Mitsubushi Rayon stiff. The pro thought that I was nearing a stiffer shaft.

After a load of balls one stood out from the rest, both in terms of distance and dispersion. I also fiddled around with the clubs settings and found that B2 suited just fine. Which leaves it at 9.5 degrees and on a minimal draw setting.

Anyway. My question is, what's the difference in how the shafts perform technically by relative comparison. Ie. Kick points, flex, torque etc.

By not using a launch monitor, am I making a mistake, or is feel and watching each shot enough?

As I say. One shaft easily out performed the other 3 that I've tried. Is that alone enough to warrant placing an order?

Im looking forward to the replies to this one Hapless..

Like you im bordering on stiff shafts also...All mine are stiff in irons and woods..
I seem to get on well with the shafts in my Ping i15 woods and hybrids and there the stock stiff ones...
I was spraying the regular ones around a fair bit but they werent much longer either...

I was on one of them launch monitor jobbies and it was indoors so i just took the results with a pinch of salt..
I think that feel and being able to see what the flight is like is much more beneficial.

Given the choice between an indoor monitor and an outdoor with no mo.itor, I'd be inclined to go with the latter. Being able to see the ball-flight is as or more important than numbers.
If the ball flies on a decent trajectory that works for you, it goes a fair distance and reasonably straight, then I'd go for it.
As has been said many times, a full Custom Fit is only as good as the swing you take with you that day.
Beg, steal or borrow the cash gor the 910 - you know you want to..

So which shaft was best..?

Thats exactly how i see it.Its also easy to open your shoulders and let rip, when theres no consequence,at the very least i'd want to be on an open air range aiming at a target.

In terms of launch, Red > Blue > RIP. Not sure which Rayon you tried. Could be a 'real' diamana.

RIP probably felt a bit firmer and perhaps duller, and Blue and Red may have felt similar, launch aside.

The RIP 60 3.2 reg.

Gave a far more penetrating flight than the Dinama red and blue. And appeared to produce less spin. It gave probably 20 yards more in carry, and because of the flight I would expect it to roll out more rather than the high balloning like flight of the Red and Blue. The pro did tell me that the RIP was on the stiffer side of regular. Sales spin? I dont know, but the results are clear.

The Rayon stiff felt like I was swinging a piece of 4 by 2.

But 9.5 degrees! I'm very surprised given the latest batch of 'high launch' drivers aimed at hackers like me. But since the swing changes, I wasn't lacking height with the driver, in fact I was getting too much!

Had a similar experience today hybrid testing. The TM RE-AX 60 was uncontrollable in stiff and regular and I was forced to try various flexes in each hybrid version to try and find something comparable. I didn't have access to a launch monitor until I went to AG to hit a few (and I wasn't going to trust there interpreation after several bad experiences) and so relied purely on my own observations. In the end the I15 with the stiff Mamiya AXIVcore Tour Red 85 shaft kept it lower than the regular flex. Sometimes I wonder if we can get too sucked into reliance on technology to give us the answer and don't rely on what feels best and flies the best with the naked eye and just hitting balls.
