Serves you right Rory????

Some pro's do shout fore though.

Take Mark Foster. When he's wayward he bellows it out.

I agree that 300(ish) yards away, with potentially alot of wind, the chances of actually hearing a call are slim and the players do the "best" they can by pointing a club, again, could this be seen 300 yards away, I'm not too sure. Marshals waving a colourd baton to indicate ball direction is not a bad idea, but it's still reliant on the spectator actually looking that way.

I think we have to understand that in golf there will be wayword shots and inevitably people will get hurt.

Is there anything in the etiquette of the game as regards shouting fore?

If so then the players should. If not, there should be.

There are always two sides to every story eh?

Indeed a good gesture from Rory, and I'm sure any decent Pro would do similar under the circumstances.

The subsequent gesture just shows his management and PR team know what they are doing. Nothing more than that. His actions at the time define his stance on the issue and they were poor.

Shouting Fore is a good practice that all golfers should adhere to, but at The Open with marshals signalling the flight direction, so many people and noise and the difficulty of knowing what direction the shout came from, is this really a big deal? I say not. Rory was genuinely sorry about hitting the lad and did the right thing. End of the non-story, if you ask me.

Im in the shout "FORE" whatever camp.
Just for the fact that its not a difficult thing to do.
I will always shout fore.

1.To warn people
2.To hopefully have witnesses if i get sued.
3.And to stop anyone giving me a slap for hitting them for not shouting Fore.

Whether or not anyone hears me shouting fore is pretty irrelevant. The right thing to do is shout fore and so that is what I'll do. My shot will be in the air for what?? 7 - 8 seconds maybe?? Does that give me enough time to assess the flight and direction, deviation by wind speed and angle, whether the targets are moving/ deaf/ old/ infirm?? No, of course I couldn't so just shout fore FFS.

I'm sure I heard a debate on Sky golf coverage a while back which suggested that pros don't shout fore as it will make the crowd duck & cover their head which may stop them seeing where the ball had gone in the rough!! Reap what you sow

Whats with all this wouldn't hear from 300 yards malarkey!! I used to shout the cows in for milking and they'd hear me half a mile away, alas so do the neighbours .
When I've hit a wayward one, it's FORE at the top of my voice. If you're propelled a hard object at X mph towards possibly another human being surely you as a human would let them know, anyone who doesn't is a knobhead of the highest order, pro or amateur

Nice gesture by Rory and/or his management - whoever arranged it doesn't really matter, as that lad will now have a much more enjoyable Open experience, and it obviously means a lot to him.

Re. shouting "Fore" - it's never going to do any harm, so just do it. But, let's remember that Rory is not alone in this - you could probably count on one hand the number of top pros who do actually shout.

Had to laugh when I read that Harrington thinned one out of the bunker at the practice area this morning, and there were lots of worried shouts of "fore" as the crowd scattered.

I think that's a bit of a cynical view of Rory. I would like to think it was a genuine response.

I heard on tv this morning about the hotel, although when the newsreader said he was staying in a tent but McIlroy paid to upgrading him, I was expecting..to a caravan.

I think that if Rory offered the lad a hotel room right after he hit him it might give more weight to the idea being his and not his management. As it is it reeks of bad PR control.

I can't imagine that any player in that situation would think to ask "Where are you staying? .... A tent - ok I'll upgrade you to a hotel"

Just watched the coverage there with Rory hitting a stray one towards another tee box, lots of people with heads down and ducking so maybe he read the forum last night ;)

Good shout Rory

Let the Rory bashing continue eh.....he's not gonna do anything right for some of you.

Just watched him miss hit badly left........with a massive cry of "Fore". Lesson learned maybe...

Rory has he learnt his lesson

Rory playing his second shot on the 3rd, hits it way left, and shouts fore, and people down the line of the ball shout fore as well, everyone takes cover, simple really. A tad lucky to land on the 4th tee.

Yeah, good shout of fore from Rory there.

And for the karma people on here.... he got a nice break ending up on the tee instead of the jungle. Maybe you had a point! :D

Re: Rory has he learnt his lesson

Good clear shout from Rory.

Now, if he could just educate the other 95% of tour pros to do the same ...... ;)
