Ryder Cup Query

That'd be a nice story, but of course it's not true.
They were match 4.
Also, Mickelson was number 10, 4, 10, 2, 11, 3, 4, 12 in previous Ryder Cup singles. His position in the lineup for President's Cup singles was equally erratic.

That’s the story that Rose went with in the Miracle documentary - he believed that Mickleson would take a spot and wanted to play against him - take it up with him

Rose in Medinah Memories: "I played 4 at Valhalla and I played Phil, and I beat him 3&2. Number 4 worked for me last time; I like to go 4. Gimme 4. I might get who I think I might get. You never should ask for Phil Mickelson because that's a crazy to do. I mean Phil can be, you know, a genius out there. It lined up. And then it's a case of when you actually see it line up, you're like 'be careful for what you wish for' and I'm like 'okay, well you've asked for this, you better go and deliver.'"

You appeared to have missed out the bit where were he said

“I had an inkling that Phil liked to play at 4 and it worked out for me before”

From Miracle at Medinah at approximately 38 mins into the program just after Garcia said about being in the middle

So why did you say he played 3?

Even though Rose was obviously embellishing things for effect, it's still nothing like what you said.

Your inability to ever simply accept you were wrong is incredibly tiresome, particularly when you instead choose to try to bully and bait others.

(...and you clearly never know when to stop.)

🙄

You sole contribution in the biggest event in golf this year to talk about on here is to come on and be pedantic about a single point when it comes to story because the recanting of that from memory wasn’t 100% perfect

You input in the thread is at your usual standard

And get your mirrors checked out

I was also thinking how interesting it was that both teams did almost identical things and also wondered if there is some kind of conversation had to make that happen.

Like it’d be interesting to see one team front load and the other team do the opposite. Arguably you might want your best players at the back to handle the pressure if it ends up that way, like what teams do in a penalty shoot-out, but they don’t seem to view it that way.

Donald was talking in about one of the shows before hand about the thinking behind front loading etc

He said something along the lines ( for the pendants amongst us the recanting may not be 100% correct ) - that they always look to have some strength early doors to get some points or colour on the board early to give the next lot coming on a boost - but they always look to leave some strength in reserve

The risk is if those strong players struggle and momentum swings the other way as we saw on Sunday but looking at most Ryder Cups there appears to be a lot of front loading

I'm pretty sure the lists are genuinely submitted blind, but of course it's a bit of rock, paper, scissors and trying to predict what your opponent will do. As they were so far behind, we knew they would 'front load' with some of their best players out early, so you either do the same thing and go man-for-man, or send a sacrificial lamb or two out early and then your best players can beat their second-string. On this occasion it looks like both teams went with their form players first - Young & Thomas were playing quite well for them, and Rose, Fleetwood & Fitz were in form for us. Then US followed that up with their best players 'on paper' in Bryson, Scottie, Xander, Cantlay, and we effectively did the same with Rory, Rahm & Aberg. So with the thinking being pretty similar on both sides, we coincidentally ended up with the best-ranked player going out 4th for both.

In recent years both teams have chosen to front load, but leave a couple of key players lower down in case it becomes tight late on. Clear view that momentum is very important and it's harder to claw back a deficit.

In penalty shoot outs you usually see the most reliable player go first. There's no point leaving your best taker until last, if other players have missed they might not even get a chance to take the fifth pen.

Think Olly said they made a little bit of a risk by front loading heavily in 2012 but they had Garcia later on as well

Actually, I think the word you're looking for is 'recounting'.

I'm genuinely sorry Phil, but, being a pedant, I just couldn't resist.

I think many people are reading too much into the playing positions. I believe English and Hovland were the 12th match off simply because one of them was injured, and result was already known. It may not even have been Hovland's name in the European envelope. They dont have to have been drawn together.
